What Is NHTSA?

NHTSA, or National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, is an agency of the Department of Transportation tasked with creating and enforcing motor vehicle safety standards within the United States. NHTSA (pronounced “NITS-ah”) also regulates fuel efficiency standards such as the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. NHTSA’s mission statement is “Save lives, prevent injuries, reduce vehicle-related crashes.”
