Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe) is a calculation used to compare the energy efficiency of an electric vehicle with a gasoline-powered internal combustion vehicle. MPGe compares the energy potential of a typical U.S. gallon of gasoline with the amount of energy used by the electric motor(s) in a vehicle. The EPA considers the energy potential of a gallon of gas to be 34.02 kilowatt-hours. The number of miles an electric vehicle can travel on 34.02 kWh is considered equivalent to the mileage of another vehicle on a gallon of gas. Most EVs and plug-in hybrids have high MPGe ratings, about 100 MPGe or higher. See also miles per gallon.
