A manual transmission is a vehicle transmission that relies on the human operator to select the gear. The transmission is the vehicle system that conveys motive power from the engine to the wheels and includes the whole drivetrain, including the clutch, gearbox, prop shaft, differential, and final drive shafts. Generally, most manual transmissions rely on a clutch mechanism to momentarily disconnect the transmission from the turning engine while changing gears. Manual transmissions have typically offered three to six forward gears, and a reverse gear. Also known as a stick-shift transmission. See also transmission
