Lidar operates according to the principles of radar but uses reflections of pulsed infrared laser light beams rather than radio waves to detect and locate objects. Lidar is commonly used in vehicles to detect obstacles and other vehicles on the road to calculate the following distance, warn the driver, and for collision avoidance and mitigation purposes.
