What Is Level 5 Autonomy?

Level 5 autonomous vehicles provide complete automation of driving functions. Level 5 vehicles, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), also provide “the driving mode-specific performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task.” For example, a Level 5 autonomous vehicle can manage all driving functions under all roadway and environmental conditions that a human driver can manage. In a Level 5 autonomous vehicle, it is expected that human controls will not be available.
