Level 4 Autonomous vehicles, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), provide high automation of driving functions even if the human driver does not respond appropriately to a request to intervene. Level 4 vehicles also provide “the driving mode-specific performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task.” For example, a Level 4 autonomous vehicle can manage speed and steering, negotiate curves, and follow a route. The vehicle cannot rely on the human driver to take control, even if human controls are present.
