Level 3 Autonomous vehicles, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), provide conditional automation of driving functions with the expectation that the human driver will respond appropriately to a request to intervene. Level 3 vehicles provide “the driving mode-specific performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task.” For example, a Level 3 autonomous vehicle will manage speed and steering, negotiate curves, and follow a route. However, the vehicle may transfer control back to the human driver at any time, and the expectation is that the human is ready and capable of taking control safely.
