Level 1 Autonomous vehicles provide some driver assistance, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Level 1 vehicles require “the driving mode-specific execution by a driver assistance system of either steering or acceleration/deceleration.” For example, a vehicle with adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assistance would qualify as Level 1 because the vehicle executes either acceleration and deceleration or some steering inputs, but not both.
