What Is Keyless Entry?

Key fob

Keyless entry is a feature that enables drivers to actuate their cars’ door locks at a distance. The simplest systems require a driver to press a button on their key fob to actuate the locking mechanism. More advanced systems, called “proximity keys,” use near-field communication to detect a matching key fob and automatically unlock the doors when the fob is in a pre-defined proximity. Some keyless entry systems may require touching the door handle.

Another keyless entry method is a security keypad on the door, which requires entering the correct code to unlock the doors, frequently found on Ford models.

Some keyless entry systems pair with push-button start, so no key is needed to operate the vehicle once the driver is cleared for entry. See also power door locks and push start.
