What Is a Hands-Free Liftgate?

2021 Mazda CX-9 liftgate.

A hands-free liftgate is a powered opening in the rear of vehicles like car trunkshatchbacks, minivans, SUVs, and wagons, usually triggered by sensors used to detect the key fob approaching the vehicle’s rear.

The feature is ready when the vehicle’s key fob enters close proximity. The driver’s foot underneath the rear bumper usually opens the automatic liftgate. The car may shine an indicator light on the ground to help locate the motion sensor.

A hands-free liftgate is ideal for people who regularly load or approach the rear of their vehicle with their hands full. See also power door locks, power windows, and welcome light.
