What Is DC Fast Charging?

DC fast charging (DCFC), also known as Level 3 charging, is one of the protocols for getting energy into electric car batteries. DC, or Direct Current, is a connection used to charge an electric vehicle. Because batteries are inherently direct current devices, alternating current (AC) must be converted to DC before you can use it to charge a battery. A DC fast charger makes that conversion within the charging station, allowing the DC device to charge a battery more quickly than a system with a converter in the vehicle or its external charger.
