A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is an automotive transmission that does not use conventional gears. Instead, most CVT transmissions use two pulleys of varying sizes to change the drive ratio. There are other designs, but all use the principle of infinitely adjustable drive ratios. One advantage to CVT use is that the engine and transmission can be optimized to prefer the most efficient engine running speed, allowing the transmission to accelerate the vehicle.
Because a CVT does not have gears, it requires a special transmission oil to function properly. Once it reaches a maintenance interval, if your car has a CVT, find a repair center that has experience servicing, repairing, and replacing continuously variable automatic transmissions.
