As for all the hype and awards for this vehicle, all I can say is go drive an Inscription trim with the air suspension (this is an important option). To make it comparable to a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes, you need to step up to the Inscription trim with the optional air suspension. Without it, the ride quality is average; with it, the ride is outstanding. I had no intention of buying a Volvo, but was very surprised. I have driven all the competition extensively and bought an XC90 First Edition so it has every available feature. The interior is amazing, the safety tech is unparalleled, and infotainment is great for me. I quickly got used to the touch tablet style interface. I personally love the heated/ventilated seats. As for the competition, the X5 from the driver’s seat is a great vehicle, but it is a smaller vehicle and the Volvo kills it in 2nd and 3rd row functionality and utility, which is what we wanted. The Lexus GX (keep in mind I really like Lexus and owned an RX for over a decade) feels heavy and sluggish compared to the Volvo. The new Audi Q7 was not available when I bought and the older version was surprisingly tight in the 2nd and 3rd row. The Acura is a strong value proposition, but the infotainment system is not user friendly. The Merc GL is a bigger vehicle but when I optioned it out to match my Volvo First Edition from a feature standpoint it was over $92k. I hope the long term reliability is above average. LOVE the Bowers and Wilkens stereo. Truly feels like a much smaller vehicle than it is while driving. Eats up highway miles. The turbo and supercharged 4 cylinder does a great job. My wife and I fight over who takes it each day. NICE JOB Volvo, a huge leap forward!

"Great Car if Volvo could figure out their Tech"
Great SUV if Volvo could figure their tech out. Car has been into the shop with more software updates than my business computer. The styling and design of the car are amazing and the third row is very useful with children. But I'm not sure Volvo was ready to play with the big boys like Mercedes and BMW.

New Info Unavailability
I received an email stating that the value of a car I have saved has changed. When I attempted to view the new value it said, "current info not available. This seems to happen very often.

Just don't
Rather than list everything that went wrong and be written off as an outlier/lemon (which based on similar experiences from other owners is unlikely to be true) let me say this: when things break, of the few mechanics willing to work on these, most are ill-equipped to diagnose even basic issues oftentimes leaving you at the mercy of your nearest dealership.

Nothing even competes with this car
Pros
Exhilarating to drive, solid, superior handling

If you are thinking about buying a Volvo, do it. Every added package is worth it, especially the bowers and Wilkins. I’ve had 4 benz, trash car, trash customer service. Volvo does it right in every way. They’re unparalleled. Audi is all plastic, bmw has a nice engine but poor quality. People who have bad things about Volvo have to be the nitpickiest people. Reviews saying the ride quality is horrible w the 22 inch wheels are on some princess and the pea bs, bc mine has it and it floats. I promise you these cars won’t disappoint. T5 is underpowered but the T6 R-Design w a polestar (my car whooped a Dodge Challenger. It’s a 3 ton car buy drives like a sports car. Trust me, just buy it yall.
Our XC90 Inscription has without question been a Real Performer since purchase. No regrets whatsoever. The Bluetooth is quirky more frequently than we care and can be outright annoying sometimes, when it does not respond according to your request. The "cushioning" in the seats is Good, but could be "cushier" like our BMW seats, which simply melted around you like "buttah." Unfortunately, the 2nd row seats are not heated/cooled, which one would definitely expect for a car in this Class & Price level range... That is kinda irritating, but we've learned to accept it. The Navigation system is NOT as accurate as one would think in this vehicle's Class & Price range. We recently learned this on a trip to the mountains of NC and rather than relying on our personal experience of driving the route, we knew was closest and best route, the Nav took us in an alternate route, which not only took us an extra 45 min. to arrive at the same destination, but took us through two-lane, winding road through the mountains, which we will never do again, when we know better. The styling is absolutely Great and people still think we're driving a "new car," which when complimented makes us feel downright Good! We purchased the "Wrap-Around Warranty" shortly after purchasing the car, which we believe was not only a Bargain, but extremely Wise investment considering all the truly electronics that came with the SUV.

Too much cabin noise
Pros
Really good safty tech
Cons
noisy cabin
I love everything about this car, especially the safety tech. But the cabin noise level is too high for this segment. I had my car checked by 2 different dealers and they both said this noise level is normal for XC90. I had MDX before that and it had much better noise isolation. Currently, my XC90 noise level is the same as my Prius so you can understand why I would rate this 3.
Other than noise level this car is perfect for road trips as you can put auto pilot on and relax a bit.
I will not buy it again just because of cabin noise
