"Expensive service"

Unfortunate to have bought in 2006, in between the free factory maintenance which runs approx at least 300 per 15000. Currently 44k miles have had to replace front brakes and tires on their last leg. Back brakes will be next (~800). Replaced rear tail light 3 times, easily breaks (280/ea). Bad computer software caused the car to lose gear with no acceleration - needed tow (w/in 12k miles). Air filter is special and expensive (roughly 150). A factory defect at 38k miles where the wheel hubs seized up to axle? and made loud noise as if car was in low gear..900 bucks (within maint). Windshield 1000. Lock ignition cylinder would not allow key in ignition - part from sweden, 800 bucks. Gas mileage approx 16-18 in city, 20 at best on highway. Check engine light on 3 times in past 3 months...

Critical Review

"Really liked it at first. Now, not so much"

Purchased this car brand new. We're in our late 60's and drive softly. We've owned it for 10 years. While it was under warranty, it hardly ever needed anything except regular maintenance. Then, the warranty ran out. Since then, it has cost us over $8,000 in repairs. Shame on us for taking it to the dealership for the repairs . . . they're very expensive and they condemn everything that is wearing; even though the particular parts still meet specs. (ie, brakes). All that is fine. I learned how to replace the front struts and brake parts myself. But I authorized the dealership to replace the motor mounts which went out about 6 months after the warranty. Oooh, that was over $1,000! The good part has been the AC system. It has never faltered. And the engine and tranny have never given a problem. But the kicker was at the end. The car cost almost $50,000 when new. 10 years later, almost zero at $4,000; even though it's virtually immaculate, has brand new tires, brand new struts, brand new battery, new brakes, etc. etc. etc. I look at other brands and see that a similar car would have almost double the value. So this is our last Volvo.

150k Miles and Still Going

This has been a great car for us. The only major things I’ve had to do was replace a catalytic converter and the shocks. I had an O2 sensor go bad and replace that. It doesn’t use a little bit of oil but at 250K what do you expect?

Good SUV
Pros

Almost everything

Cons

Premium gas

I bought it new in 2007. Never had any issues with it except some reasonable fixes. Now it's 2024 and I still have and use it with 217,000 miles on the car. No major replacements - it still has an original engine, transmission, A/C, etc. Compare to my next 2015 Volvo S60 with blown engine at 125,000 miles this XC90 is truly a dream car. BTW, my first 2004 Volvo S40 made 325,000 w/o any issues as well.

Saved My Friends Life
Pros

Built different

Cons

you should see the other car

My friend was hit, T-boned, diver side door. The car went flying and flipped across 2 lines and he was able to walk away with only a scratch. His car was barely dented while the other car was completely destroyed. The 2009 Volvo XC90 is a very durable very reliable car. Built Volvo Tough.

Best car ever
Pros

Everything.

I’ve had my XC90 Volvo for 17 years and had to finally say goodbye. I only had to change the timing belt but now at 206,000 miles, I have to replace the head gasket. It still looks great! I love my Volvo and will definitely buy another one!

I love this car!!
Pros

Looks good. Dependable. Great transmission.

Cons

16-18 mpg

I got real value out of a 2008 Volvo XC90. Always dependable. I always had it serviced regularly. Had the belts changed around 175,000 miles. Not a bit of rust on it. Still looks nice. Interior has held up. I enjoyed having a 7-seat vehicle. I had bought this car used at 68,000 miles. Would buy another Volvo based on this great SUV. Should be able to get another 75,000 miles out of it- which means passing it to my teenage drivers in the house.

The Volvo XC90 2.7t 2003 is a good car. Very reliable. Transmission and turbo still going strong and at 175,000 miles hope for 275,000!

XC90 is SO Safe (2014)
Pros

Works like a truck, indestructible.

Cons

Wish they still built it with a V8!

The Volvo reputation for safety is "right on". I call it my "truck" because I use it like a truck. We're getting about 22 mpg which is great for a vehicle with full-time all-wheel-drive. I don't mind paying for a little more gas because it feels like buying life insurance.
