Positive Review

"Solid, comfortable, safe and love the styling"

All around great cr with lots of cargo space. never have had single issue with it. All maintenance covered to 60.000+. All I have done is put on 4 new Michelins. Buying sheeps for drivers seat to prolong seat wear. I tend to drive to at least 100,000 as paid cash for it in 2011. Perfect car for me to haul all sorts of stuff from shavings for a horse stall, sample of hay , horse feed, etc. LOVE it, my 3rd wagon, one was V40, a little too small for me to feel safe on a trip to NE I take every year.

Critical Review

"Significant reliability issues"

Have had the car for only 4 months and have had it in the shop 5 times already. Some minor issues, but the recurring major issue is that the "low oil" light comes on every few thousand miles. Generally the oil is fine, and they have upgraded the software twice, soon to be three times as the car is having the issue as I write this. But as there doesn't seem to be a fix, you basically have to allow an extra 20 minutes to get anywhere in case you have to stop and check the oil. Or alternatively, you essentially lose your low oil warning feature because you ignore it and continue driving (at the risk that this time the oil is actually low). Having this reliability issue at this price point is inconceivable.

Great car but expensive to fix
Pros

Safe, great acceleration, roomy.

Cons

Wicked expensive to fix when things break.

Loved this car because of its reputation for safety, comfort, and dependability. It's been the family hauler for almost eight (8) years and has done well. The only complaint I have is that it's really, really, expensive to fix when things go wrong. Unfortunately, it started using oil at 50,000 miles - which we have been able to work around by adding a quart between oil changes. The real challenge, however, is how expensive it is to fix when things break. I was recently told that the exhaust system and catalytic converter may go and it's a $5,000 fix. Ouch. I figure that anytime I need to replace something, e.g., brakes, a front bearing, the serpentine belt, etc. it's going to be $1,000 repair. Fortunately, I only get a couple of those a year which makes fixing it cheaper than replacing the car. I really wish Volvo still made this car as I believe it was one (1) of their best sellers. If they did, I would buy it again.

Platinum level a real treat
Pros

T5 engine has decent gas mileage. Many features.

Cons

Lacks ventilated seats, unusual for $50K retail.

We've been so happy with our 2013 XC70, purchased new that year, we bought a 2016 Platinum version in summer 2021.

Inspired to buy another
Pros

Solid build, quiet and comfortable, fast.

Cons

Repairs can be pricey. Poor gas mileage.

This has been an excellent vehicle and at over 135,000 miles is still running strong. It's the Premium Plus version. It's quiet inside and the T6 engine is quite fast, but lousy on gas. (Good thing it's 87 octane.) Like this one so much that last summer we bought a 2016 Platinum version of the XC70.

A moose in the best Volvo tradition
Pros

Smooth, quiet and supremely comfortable.

Cons

None so far.

I bought the vehicle a year ago with 65,000 miles on the clock after my Volvo 940 was rear-ended and totaled. Before the 940, I had a 740 wagon for 26 years and 460,000 miles. When Volvo came out with the first of its FWD cars in the US, I believed it was the end of the Volvo tradition that gave rise to a much-loved dependable, safe, reliable car. But after watching a video in which an XC70 had a head-on collision with a semi and the driver survived, I took another look. My XC70 is AWD and has the non-turbo 3.2 six. It's a beauty. It's smooth and quiet and sits on the road like a tank. The seats are the most comfortable I've ever experienced. I've taken a few longish trips in it and it's exceeded all my expectations. From what I hear, the electronics can be a nightmare if things go wrong. But until that happens, I'm a happy camper. If you drive with a light foot, the gas mileage isn't bad. I get about 21-23 around town and up to 29 on the freeway. It's really a pity that the new Volvos have 4 cyl turbo engines because this straight six is a winner. Much more stable than any SUV and just as practical.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS WAGON UNTIL........
Pros

Comfort, acceleration,cargo capacity, handling

Cons

road noise, alternator, transmission, suspension

This was my 4th Volvo and the most comfortable car I ever owned. I bought it used with ~ 30,000 miles. It was a pleasure to drive cross country. The power and acceleration of the V6 was astounding. During the 9 years I owned it, I had to replace the alternator, front end suspension stabilizer bars, and finally at 120,000 miles - the transmission. The tranny left me stranded in a remote area outside of Blessing, Texas, 95 miles southwest of Houston with two dogs and my upset wife. A major US roadside assistance association failed to rescue us and we were finally towed by a good friend 60 miles to the closest shop that could find and replace the tranny, in Klute, Texas. The towing eye which screwed into the front of the XC70 made it easy to connect the towing chain. The shop found us a used transmission in Houston with 74,000 miles and replaced it at half the price of any bids we had from Houston. Six months later we went shopping for Volvos in San Antonio, test drove V60 and V90 Cross countrys but their interior space was limited compared to the XC70. We ended up trading the XC70 for a beautiful used black 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited and love it!
