The 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country is a unique luxury wagon combining sedan-like driving dynamics with SUV-like versatility, all at an affordable price relative to its closest competitors. Pricing starts at $60,245.
Unique in today’s market, the 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country is a luxury wagon with a nod or two to SUVs. Ultra-comfy seats and a smooth ride enhance its upmarket interior. Pricing starts at $59,150.
There’s no doubt in our minds that Volvo retains the V90 Cross Country (V90 CC) because it’s as much an SUV as it is a station wagon. In fact, Volvo eliminated the regular V90 wagon a couple of years ago, hanging on to the more rugged V90 CC. Where Subaru has chosen to call its Outback an SUV, Volvo still categorizes the V90 CC as a wagon. No question about it: Both look like wagons. However, the V90 CC offers more ground clearance and a higher seating position than a wagon.
Moreover, as at least one of our readers commented, mounting snow tires on it in winter turns it into a snow beast. We are big fans of wagons and wish there were more out there. Benefitting from a steady turbocharged-supercharged 4-cylinder powertrain and styling that still turns heads, the V90 CC is a compelling alternative to an SUV.
No major changes for 2024.
The 2024 Volvo V90 has a starting sticker price of $60,245, with the range-topping V90 B6 Ultimate Cross Country kicking off at $65,845. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $5,091 to $6,052 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

Before buying the Volvo V90 Cross Country, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. The Volvo V90 CC does a better-than-average job of retaining its value within the segment. It trails the Audi A6 allroad in 3-year and 5-year residual value but still outshines most luxury vehicles in this regard.
Volvo employs a 295-horsepower supercharged and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine featuring a mild-hybrid (MHEV) system. It’s bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission to generate go in the AWD V90 CC. The MHEV technology doesn’t help power the wheels but does power a few components. Unlike most other models in the Volvo lineup, the V90 CC doesn’t have a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. Nor do we know of any plans for one. The “twin-charged” 4-cylinder engine probably won’t wow you, but it’s more than sufficient for everyday driving and highway cruising. Acceleration is respectably quick, and the V90 is powerful enough for stress-free highway passing.
It’s worth noting that the two main rivals of the V90 Cross Country — the Audi A6 Allroad (335 horsepower) and Mercedez-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon (362 horsepower) — have more powerful engines. As a result, the A6 Allroad is a second quicker in the gallop from zero to 60 (5.1 seconds versus 6.1 seconds). The E-Class All-Terrain Wagon does it in 5.3 seconds.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country’s driving character is somewhere between a sedan and an SUV. The ride height (8.0 inches) is greater than an average sedan’s, but it’s more agile with less body roll than an SUV.
The on-road comfort in this wagon is impressive. The compliant suspension makes for a comfortable ride and gets better if you opt for the optional adaptive air suspension. The comfortable seats and quiet cabin make for a serene ride.
The off-road capabilities of the V90 Cross Country are pretty good for a luxury car with this level of comfort. It’s not an extreme off-roader by any means, but standard AWD and the higher ground clearance make this Volvo wagon suitable for snowy roads and mild off-roading.
With only one engine and AWD standard, the fuel economy story is simple: the V90 CC delivers 25 mpg (22 city, 29 highway) in combined driving. This is better than its two key competitors but only by one mpg in combined driving. You can check out more fuel economy information on the EPA’s website.
Roomy and comfortable, the Volvo V90 Cross Country interior is constructed with high-quality materials. Moreover, many of our readers attest the seats are some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find anywhere.
The seating space in this wagon is generous, and you can comfortably seat up to four adults, with enough room for five in a pinch. Its Audi and Mercedes competitors are a bit longer than the V90 CC, the effects of which we can see in rear legroom measurements. The V90 CC offers 35.9 inches, the A6 allroad quattro has 37.4 inches, and the E-Class All-Terrain Wagon has 36.1 inches.
The same holds true for cargo space. Behind the second-row seat, the V90 CC provides 25.5 cubic feet of cargo room, which expands to 53.9 cubic feet with the second-row seat folded. In the allroad, it’s 24.2/58.5 and even more in the All-Terrain Wagon.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country strikes an excellent balance between premium and rugged. The wagon body makes the styling unique, and the headlights and taillights are distinctly Volvo. The Ultimate trim ups the style factor with standard 20-inch wheels and optional 21-inch matte-black wheels.
Although a tad shorter, the size of the V90 CC is on par with the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain Wagon. It’s like a midsize luxury sedan but with a wagon body.
Versatile wagon body
You don’t see a lot of station wagons on the road today, but the V90 CC carries the torch of the old-school Volvo wagon. In addition to making a fashion statement, the versatile wagon body gives it more cargo space than the average sedan.
Luxurious interior
The roomy cabin of the Volvo V90 CC features premium design and top-notch materials. Leather seating is standard, and if you upgrade to the Ultimate trim, you get luxuries like extra-soft Nappa leather upholstery, massaging front seats, a head-up display, and even a crystal shifter.
Off-road capability
Standard AWD and 8.0 inches of ground clearance make the V90 Cross Country more adventurous than the average luxury car. It can tackle just about any road condition and is up for mild off-roading. The V90 CC is a great luxury car for snowy climates.
Class-leading safety
Volvo continues its reputation for building some of the safest cars on the market, and the V90 CC is no exception. It has a long list of standard safety features like the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system, blind-spot monitoring, road sign information, and much more.
Adaptive air suspension
This optional feature for the V90 CC makes this wagon both sportier and more comfortable. Glide over the road in Comfort mode or tighten the handling in Sport mode. It also automatically adjusts the car’s ride height.
Google Built-In
The Google-based infotainment system in the Volvo V90 CC is a little different, but it’s intuitive once you get past the learning curve. It has handy tools built-in, like Google Maps and Google Assistant. Apple CarPlay also comes standard.
The Volvo V90 Cross Country has one available engine. It’s a 4-cylinder that’s both turbocharged and supercharged, plus it has a mild-hybrid system that slightly improves performance and efficiency. It has standard AWD and an 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain won’t pin you into your seat under hard acceleration, but it has enough thrust for most drivers. The powertrain isn’t as aggressive as those of the A6 allroad or E-Class All-Terrain Wagon. However, we like that Volvo tamed the V90 CC with the average driver’s expectations in mind. In other words, you’re not paying for performance you will probably never need or use to its best advantage.
Volvo provides the same warranty coverage as most other European luxury brands. Its bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and its powertrain warranty are for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Owners also receive three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Although we believe the Volvo V90 CC is one of the safer vehicles on the road, the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t rated the current generation. Furthermore, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) changed its testing protocols for 2023 and has yet to rate the V90 CC. But in 2022, it named the V90 CC to its elite list of Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) vehicles.
Among the V90 CC’s standard advanced safety features are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.
The 2024 Volvo V90 is in the top 11-25% for Cost to Own among all Luxury Cars.
