Positive Review
I bought my 1998 Volvo V70 GLT a few months ago.17 yr old car that drives like new. I bought it from the original owners and they maintained it at Volvo dealer up until the last few years. The only things I have had to do to it was normal maintenance that the previous owner had let go ie. brakes, replacing timing belt, water pump etc. I did these as preventative measures because I believe it's a keeper. Need to replace 1 front fender because of a rust hole but that's the only spot on the car that has rusted. The car has 214 000m/344 000km and works like a dream. I can hardly wait to try her in the snow. I have taken it on many road trips and the gas mileage is much better than the Dodge van I had owned and it's much more comfortable on long trips. The turbo makes passing a dream..I'd really like to know how fast it will go...lol I LOVE THIS CAR! :)
Critical Review
Bought the car used (98 V70 GLT) with 122,000 miles and it was about 8 years old. Thought it was OK since the CarFax report showed the change of ownership indicated that the bulk of the milage had only happened in the past 2-3 years which seemed to indicate a lot of highway miles. Long story short- the car is very comfortable but I had 2 main issues with it. Poor gas milage around town (15 mpg) although I did get 25 on highway. Yes, I had tuned up and filters changed etc. I expected more from a 5 cyl. car. - Then there were the repairs, everything from major engine work to the headlight on/ off switch. Thank goodness I had a private mechanic that softened the labor blow. Volvo parts are expensive and many parts even required a wait. Sensor and check engine lights were constantly coming on, also ABS and traction control. I have car serviced for oil every 3-4K, so I know that it was not routine maint. problem. - I am sure if I had bought new and only leased for 3 years or traded in then I would have had a different experience, but I could only afford used and I am sad to say that I had a very disappointing experience. That is really sad is I know someone who also bought the same year and model used and is having a similarly bad experience (although I think mine was worse). Sad to say that I am turned off to Volvo and will never purchase another one, new or used. I just traded it in to buy a new vehicle and I literally limped it up to the dealership as I thought I might have to have it towed in!

AWD
Premium fuel
Let me see 23 years old and no rust amazing, mine is AWD with 2.4 turbo plenty of power, and in the snow better than my Jeep. Front and side air bags, heated seats still work, yes you have to maintain the car if you want it to last a long time. This is my go to car in bad weather, almost impossible to find one now, this car will out live me. If you happen to find one and it was taken care of, grab it, have a mechanic check it out if you are not mechanically inclined. A young family or a new young driver, not a safer car around, built strong real strong.
The AWD
Gas mileage
If you can keep up with the maintenance especially oil changes, Volvo will last 300,000 miles easily. Never has let me down, never been stuck in the snow with the AWD. These Volvo's are built with a roll cage very well built cars that do not rust.
Well built, no rust on a 21 year old car amazing.
Have a heavy foot gas mileage will be an issue.
I have a 1998 V70 AWD turbo with 170.000 miles, just replaced the original front Volvo struts. I put cheap China front struts on because I do not drive the car that much anymore, maybe 3500 miles a year. My children used this car for school, great car to put young drivers into, or a young family. Well built cars with safety there main concern, if they are not maintained could be issues. However if you can find one that has been maintained , they will go 300,000 miles easy.
Reliable and comfortable
none worth mentioning
I bought my 98 V70 Base when it came off a lease in 2000, and aside from the usual maintenance and fixes (on my 3rd ABS module -- go with the ebay rebuilds), this wagon has held up exceptionally well. The cloth interior still looks new. No car seats are more comfortable. And there is plenty of room for my 90lb dog and additional freight. I easily crowd 30mpg on the open road, and it is a cinch to tune up the engine and keep it purring. This was a great model year for Volvos -- assembled in Sweden and incredibly reliable. My non-turbo FWD has plenty of pep and still rides like a dream.
build quality, value, fuel economy
difficult to repair
Preface: Apparently the text box for the reviews does not parse apostrophes or linefeeds. I have the 2000 SE model of this vehicle with a black exterior and interior with black leather seats. And the one thing I feel I absolutely must communicate is this: despite my better judgement and reasoning, I cannot help but love this car. I got it with 167,526 miles on it and being rather worse for wear; whoever had it before me did not go easy on it. It only has one key (it probably had two at some point, but that was before my time) that has a habit of simply not turning in the ignition for anywhere from a few seconds to twenty minutes at times. The leather seats and interior upholstery is coming undone. The locks dont work half the time. The battery has a phantom power draw that will completely drain it in under an hour if any accessories are used without turning on the engine. The air conditioning will cut out and not come back on if the engine goes above 2000 RPM. The hood is broken so its impossible to open without a second person. Some of the speakers cut in and out. The entire dashboard will cut out completely at times (including the mileage counter and speedometer). The steering feels like driving on pillows. The brakes dont engage until the pedal is pressed halfway down. And I know of at least three pieces the car as a whole is missing completely. That said, despite all my better judgement and reasoning, I love this car. This might be because its the first car Ive owned, or maybe its just because I love a good challenge, but one way or another its really grown on me in the year or so Ive had it. The one thing that most surprises me about this car, considering how old it is the fuel economy paired with the massive gas tank; Ive gone 497 miles on a single tank and still had about 1.6 gallons left. Im assuming that the issues Ive experienced are not what the vast majority of people have experienced, so Id have a hard time recommending my car to people, but recommending another V70 to anybody would be easy.
Reliability
Sluggish uphill.
I bought this car from a friend with 248,000 miles on it and it now has 310,000 miles and is still running strong. It rips through snow, heats up quick and has plenty of space in it. Fold the seats down and you can use it for some light hauling or sleep in it. I usually take my gear camping and such with it. The Tracs function makes it even better in the snow along with 4 new snow tires. I won't drive anything else in the winter. Mechanically, I've only had to replace the things that all cars need. Exhaust, rear shocks, brakes and recently I replaced the timing belt and put some new oil seals in the motor. My wife loves it more than I do! Mileage is OK. While it's not flashy or quick, it's reliable! It's still my everyday driver in the snow and has earned the Norse goddess' name of Freya.
Fun to drive, reliable, tons of space, comfortable
expensive to repair, isn't a brand new BMW
Bought this car from my best friend who moved across the country. With 183000 it runs strongly with very few problems. This car is the most reliable hunk of metal I have ever sat in. When I first got it, I ran it about 100,000 miles overdue for a tune up without knowing, had a bad 02 sensor, however the car ran perfect without giving me any issues until my mechanic informed me of its service history. Although I do not suggest it, this car can run great with a few worn out parts. It does great in snow, ice and mud. I absolutely love this car. The back space is perfect size and if you fold the seats down flat, it can transform into a sleeper. I built a sleeping platform with enough room for 2 people to lay comfortable. Has OK gas mileage, but hey, its almost 20 years old now.
