Positive Review
The 2008 Volvo v50 was one of the better Volvos I've driven. I never really had any problems with the car, other than having to fix the oil pan because of these horrible pot holes in New Orleans. The only flaw is that the tires or more expensive because only premium tires fit on it.
Critical Review
We bought our 2006 V50 from the #1 dealer in the state, with less than 50,000 miles. In one year, we had to replace faulty wheel bearings and the front driver's side spring. One of the best things about volvos in the past has been the quality of the steel they use in the construction. We are very surprised that the car has needed repairs to two solid steel parts. Our driving habits are gentle, and the roads we use are fairly new and smooth. I have had other volvos in the past, and the steel in them outlived expectations. Has anyone else out there needed a new spring in their 5 year old car? We are trying to get the dealer to take the car back.

Sporty
Kind of small inside.
Very nice all around car. Cramped seating in the back but otherwise fine. Ok fuel mileage. Nice leather seats. Nice cargo area with backseats laid down.
Easy to repair yourself, dependable, comfortable
Slow acceleration, trans shifts gears too late.
I have owned my V50 for three years now and drove it 20,000 miles. It was certainly hard to find, but it was worth the effort. This is my first Volvo and I've been impressed by the excellent quality of the interior components. It took a year to fix the problems it had, but now since they are taken care of, the car is a dependable commuter vehicle. Fuel mileage averages 25MPG. The wagon's handling is superb. It is quite nimble if you're weaving in traffic and stays firmly on track at any highway speed. The brakes are also very good in a pinch. The ride is more on the sporty side and a little hard for my taste. The AWD V50 has outstanding driveability in heavy snow. I drove through 130 miles of it and it handles beautifully and never got stuck. The twin tailpipes are a nice touch and it has an athletic appearance to it. I am 6' tall and there is just enough room for me to drive comfortably. Since Volvo builds the safest cars, I've enjoyed a lower insurance premium. If you are shopping for a Volvo from this period, make sure the sunroof drain holes are kept clear to avoid expensive repairs.
Fun sporty engine, revs, spacious, safe
none
Had this car for 16 years. She got me through a lot and looked great until her death a few weeks ago. It was an awful wreck and I should have died but she saved my life.
Fun sporty reliable and low cost to maintain
Bit rough ride sometimes
Have it for 14 years. I you maintain it well it will last for a long time. Fun to drive bit sporty, practical wagon, good gas mileage, good looking car, safe driving even in winter storms with tiptronic drive.
Great engine, good looking, utility
Not for speeder
I bought this vehicle new. Sleek looking even after 11 years on the road the paint job still shiny. Engine is smooth and reliable. The car is not complicate for self service. I did oil, transmission fluid, serpentine belt change myself by just watching youtube. I did, however, replace the alternator, both front drive shafts when the boots cracked, brake rotors and pads, catalytic converter when it throws code at about 120k miles, and both oxygen sensors myself and I am not even close to a mechanic, all by watching youtube and borrow tools from local autopart stores. The car still runs like new. I recently tow a trailer with broken concrete weights 1460 lbs to a landfill with no trouble, though not a fast run. Love the folded back seats and hatch back to throw in my inflatable kayak, bicycles, and stuffs, even make a good bed on long trip. Oh ya, I also tow my boat with it and it was the only station wagon tow boat at any lake parking I went to. Only complain is the A/C takes about 10 minutes to cool when outside was 110F, and it cycles after about 5-6 hours, means you will have about 30 minutes warm air even a/c is on.
Good looking, excellent performance and handling,
No parking assist!
I would keep my V50 forever if it weren't for my failing depth perception. This has been the bestest car I've ever owned. The seats alone have me completely spoiled. I've been looking for a new car with all the driver assistance beeps because I keep bumping into things in tight spaces like parking lots and garages, but there's nothing out there that can compare to my Volvo! And the new Volvo's are out of my price range. What to do?
So fun to drive!
We love this car--it has been such a wonderful ride for us, especially when our children were smaller. We are looking now for a minivan-type vehicle because as our boys get older is it getting a little cramped. It has great pickup, and the interior styling can't be beat. Great soundsystem, as well.
Bought as a second car, but became primary when other car was totaled out (another Volvo, no injury - that's why this is my 3rd Volvo.) Mileage around town 21/24, winter/summer, 32-33 on trips, have gotten as high as 36. It is a turbo, so I feed it nothing but premium and it performs well. Had to replace front sway bar links, a common Volvo problem. Other than that, no expenses in last 3 years. Only complaint is interior appearance. It is somewhat plain when compared to the S60, S80, & V70.
