Drivers looking for something a little different in midsize luxury sedans should consider the Volvo S90. It has unique styling and top-notch interior quality with some of the most comfortable seats in this competitive class.
It’s not as sporty as its German rivals like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but the S90 prioritizes comfort and safety over performance. It earns the coveted Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ designation and has impressive safety features like the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system.
If you like the idea of improved performance and efficiency, you’ll enjoy the available T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Volvo S90.
2023 Volvo S90 pricing starts at $40,828 for the S90 B6 Plus Bright Theme Sedan 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $58,045 when new. The range-topping 2023 S90 T8 Recharge Ultimate Bright Theme Plug-In Hybrid Sedan 4D starts at $46,484 today, originally priced from $71,545.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 Volvo S90 models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
Driving the Volvo S90 is a serene and pleasant experience. The spacious interior has some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find in any automobile, and the material quality is excellent. The compliant suspension is comfortable on rough and smooth roads alike, and comfort is improved further if you opt for the available adaptive air suspension.
If you’re looking for the engaging driving experience of a sports sedan, you may be more satisfied with one of the German rivals of the S90. We wouldn’t call the Volvo boring, but it prioritizes comfort over performance.
The standard mild-hybrid B6 powertrain has both a turbocharger and supercharger to make for swift acceleration. Performance is improved in the Recharge model with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain making over 400 horsepower, but there’s no ultra-high-performance model that can compete with high-powered sports sedans like the BMW M5.
The Volvo S90 has a lovely interior with lots of space and high-end materials. The interior design is luxurious and roomy enough to seat four adults comfortably, or five in a pinch.
It gets nicer in the Ultimate trim with Nappa leather seating, more front-seat adjustability, and even a crystal shifter. Some excellent standard features include 4-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, a digital gauge cluster, and wood trim.
One weak spot of the Volvo S90? Its trunk is on the smaller side for this class, with only 13.5 cubic feet of space.
The exterior design of the Volvo S90 is both unique and subtle. It has a distinct Scandinavian character, and the Volvo corporate design language looks excellent on a midsize sedan. The light signature is distinctive, and its tasteful use of chrome helps with its upscale look.
The size of the Volvo S90 is on the bigger side of the midsize luxury sedan segment. It’s slightly longer than the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
1. Google Built-In
The infotainment system in the Volvo S90 uses Google-based software full of useful features. It has Google Maps and Google Assistant built-in, plus it comes with Apple CarPlay and two USB ports.
2. Adaptive Air Suspension
The adaptive air suspension system available for the Ultimate models improves the comfort of the S90. It makes this sedan glide over the road in Comfort mode, tightens up the handling in Sport mode, and automatically adjusts the car’s ride height.
3. Multiple Premium Audio Systems
The standard 220-watt, 10-speaker audio system in the S90 sounds good, but this luxury car offers two optional premium audio systems to take your sound quality to the next level. A 600-watt, 14-speaker Harman Kardon is optional on the Plus model and standard on the Ultimate trim. True audiophiles will want the Bowers & Wilkins 1,460-watt, 19-speaker system available in the Ultimate model.
4. Pilot Assist
The standard Pilot Assist Driver Assistance System is part of what makes the S90 so safe. It makes highway driving a breeze with adaptive cruise control and additional safety features like lane-keeping aid, road sign information, blind-spot monitoring, and much more.
5. Lounge Package
The Lounge Package available for the S90 Ultimate trim improves comfort for everyone. It adds a luxury rear armrest and ventilated rear seats, while the front-seat occupants are treated to massaging seats.
6. T8 Plug-In Hybrid
The Volvo S90 Recharge model with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain is a good upgrade if budget allows. It delivers impressive power and torque numbers and can travel up to 38 miles on battery power alone on a full charge.
The Volvo S90 has two engine options. The base B6 powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder with a mild-hybrid system, slightly improving its performance and efficiency.
The Recharge model comes with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. It improves both performance and efficiency, and it can travel up to 38 miles on electricity alone. Even with a depleted hybrid battery, it’s still pretty fuel-efficient.
Every S90 has an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD).
