Positive Review
After driving this car for 10 years and getting it up to 180k miles...it prob saved my life in a car accident recently. In an accident that would have probably totaled most cars and sent most people to the hospital...I was lucky to only have minor damage on the car and I left with very minor scrapes and bruises. Being able to walk away from a very bad accident without any major injury is why the safety Volvo always highlights is absolutely true.
Critical Review
I was concerned about safety after my Honda got taken out by a Dodge Neon (!), so I purchased this sturdier Volvo, used. It's great to drive and doesn't look like every other car on the road, but there always seems to be something wrong with it: oxygen sensors, the fuel pump, faulty thermometer gauges, etc. I'm surprised the check engine light hasn't burnt out by now; most of the other bulbs have! The repairs are expensive, and so are the parts. Even the battery costs twice as much as the ones for "normal" cars. Other manufacturers are improving their cars' safety ratings, so it would be well worth your time to check out those cars, instead.

Heated bucket leather reclining seats, need more?
No window tint, faded original 2002 paint
Bought used for 'put around' car. Original body parts and paint. No dents, dings, tares or broken features... except the center console leather, it got scratched up, but no tares. Parked in long term storage for a year-ish. Pulled it out of storage and drove for about 5 months +/-. New battery, breaks, tires, front right ball joints / bearings. Runs like the day I bought it. Mechanic said I could get another (overly optimistic?) 300K miles out of it with continued upkeep. It immediately overheated after the last oil change / 'Full system fluid flush', looks like it needs a new "coolant recovery tank". Haven't it driven again since that evening. I drive my work provided 2020 Ford F250 24/7, so the Volvo is just taking up space.
Ok gas mileage, sunroof, good speakers,
expensive and frequent repair, poor Interior
The car is not great. The best thing about it is the speakers and sunroof. I had people rave about the quality, and I’ve have to get tons of work done, and it still acts like something is wrong with it. I drive it so easy. All of which is insanely priced because it’s hard to get to and overpriced. Also the interior is falling apart on me. A decent first car, but I’m getting rid of it ASAP.
strong body
trasy software and loudness
i bought it as new. from day one, the dashboard lights including "check engine" came on and off randomly during driving and the car made all sorts of mild but unusual noises. i had to take the car back to the dealer for checkup more than 30 times the first year alone, and they treated me like a crazy lady. the mechanics who rode with me denied any noise or anything wrong. at one point they replaced the entire computer-software part with "upgraded" version without acknowledging anything wrong, and pretended they were doing me a big favor. nonetheless, the software never worked properly: for instance, the heating fan / system went bezerk and died one winter. it is too noisy to enjoy music or even conversation in the car. i still have it sitting on the premise of my house. my lawyer dissuaded me from suing the dealer/carmaker for this lemon car, but it has been a lemon car all along.
Gained this car in 2011 and drove this car to Florida when I was in college. It did have a few problems off and on but honestly I would take responsibility for some it since I was a poor college student who could barely afford gas let alone maintenance. There were issues with the alternator and battery dying while on the road although with Florida heavy rains I was told this is pretty common. The brakes have been replaced along with several sets of headlights and windshield wipers. This car drives like a dream and I felt that from the first moment I test drove this car it's handling is incredible and its pickup is amazing. Gas mileage I've always felt was very standard although it does take the 91. I'm sad to be looking for a new car but while a safe and reliable vehicle it is very outdated inside. The radio is very clearly before aux cords and does not have a tape player so for years I've not been able to play my own music. This car will now be going to my 16 yr old sister as a hand-me-down and that really is the perfect use for such a safe little car.

Reliable, fun to drive, comfortable seats, MPG
Road noise, typical maintenance with age
I got my 03 S40 in Feb 2016 with 70k miles. 3,500 miles and 4 months later I still love this car. Design: I think it looks great on the outside. The interior is dated, but it's a 2003 so it should be. Comfort: I love the seats! All the seats (except the back middle) are so comfortable. I could drive this car all day. The supsension is more "sporty" so it rides stiffer than other small cars. Driving: This thing is so much fun. It handles like a sports car and has awesome pep with that turbo! Road noise is quite loud. Maintenance: When I got the car I knowingly bought it with a few problems. I have had to replace the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator to fix a problem with the car taking a long time to start. I replaced the wiper fluid nozzles as those has broken. The display on the radio goes black occasionally but usually comes back. I need to replace vacuum hoses as they are cracking but I haven't gotten to it yet. I get 25MPG City and 35MPH Highway.
good value for the price
changing light bulbs constantly
This car has been very reliable. People generally like Volvos and tell me they can't believe it's a 2003 model. My only gripe is that the lights are always on and the bulbs go out all the time.
I had my volvo for 2 years. It was a great car. As much as people say its expensive to fix... thats a joke. I ordered all my parts from ebay. The parts were way cheaper than a couple of my other cars. Being smart about buying your parts and who you have put them in is where you save money. But recently i flipped my volvo from front to roof and roof to drivers side and back onto its wheels. My sister and her little dog where with me. We had a couple of scratches.. like 2 each. and a bump on our heads. the car unfortunately is being considered totaled because the back of the roof is dented and a rear window will not be able to be put back in. A deer ran into the side of the car and did no damage. She was a great car and never left me stranded. She drove great and handled wonderfully!
