Volkswagen is getting serious about electrification, and the ID.4 is proof. It’s the first electric Volkswagen SUV in North America and shows us what to expect in the near future from the brand. A few perks of the ID.4 include an excellent interior packed with technology, a stylish look, and a smooth and quiet ride. Not to mention the everyday practicality of a compact crossover with plenty of space.
There are single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) options for the ID.4, both of which are available for either of the two available trims. The dual-motor AWD setup offers more performance and better all-weather traction.
For 2022, the ID.4 has improved range. The rear-drive ID.4 Pro now can go 280 miles on a charge, up from 260. The ID.4 Pro S is now rated at an estimated 268 miles, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) Pro comes in at an estimated 251 miles.
A couple of rivals of the Volkswagen ID.4 include the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y, which are both bigger and more expensive. One more affordable option in electric crossover SUVs is the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, but that’s quite a bit smaller than the ID.4.
2022 Volkswagen ID.4 pricing starts at $21,611 for the ID.4 Pro Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $42,525 when new. The range-topping 2022 ID.4 Pro S Sport Utility 4D starts at $22,613 today, originally priced from $47,025.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a comfortable and agreeable SUV to drive. The ride is smooth, and the cabin is quiet. The battery pack is packaged into the floor of the SUV, which gives it a low center of gravity. That translates to well-balanced handling in spirited driving and relaxed cruising. The four drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom) let you customize your drive to suit the mood.
The base single-motor setup delivers adequate performance, but this is not the sportiest electric SUV. The acceleration is quick, but the power delivery is linear enough that it doesn’t get away from you. You get a significant improvement in power and torque when you upgrade to AWD. If you want a performance-oriented SUV that won’t break the bank, this is the one to get.
The interior of the ID.4 is a little different from the rest of the Volkswagen lineup. It has an upscale simplicity that’s pleasing to the eye and comfortable to sit in. The seats are comfortable in both rows, and the quality of the interior materials is on par with the price.
This is a very spacious SUV for its size for both passengers and cargo. Both rows of seats have plenty of legroom, even for taller adults. Even fitting three people in the back is reasonably comfortable. The ID.4 has 30.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats, increasing to 64.2 cubic feet with the back seats folded down.
The look of the ID.4 strikes a nice balance of looking high-tech and futuristic while still looking like a normal SUV. We mean that in a good way; it isn’t too showy about being electric. It has a handsome light signature and nice body lines that make it a bit of a departure from the more conservative styling of the rest of the Volkswagen lineup.
The size of the Volkswagen ID.4 is about average for a compact SUV like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. The ID.4 is slotted between the smaller VW Taos and the bigger Tiguan in the Volkswagen lineup.
IQ.DRIVE
The standard IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.
VOLKSWAGEN ID.COCKPIT
A high-tech configurable digital instrument display with a vibrant and informative screen comes standard on the ID.4.
The base Pro trim of the Volkswagen ID.4 is very well-equipped for an entry trim. The standard powertrain is an electric motor mated to a lithium-ion battery pack. It has an 11 kW AC on-board charger and 135 kW DC fast charging capability. The new Auto Hold feature holds the ID.4 at a stop without needing to put your foot on the brake.
Standard features on the Pro trim include four drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom), automatic LED headlights, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, multicolor ambient interior lighting, cloth seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
The standard infotainment system is a 10-inch screen with navigation, HD Radio, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other standard tech features include four USB-C ports, the ID.Cockpit digital instrument display, 7-speaker audio, and wireless phone charging.
The standard IQ.DRIVE safety suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active side assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane assist, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and travel assist. Other standard safety features include front and rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, dynamic road sign display, and post-collision braking.
The Pro S trim adds many desirable premium features to the ID.4. It includes upgraded LED lighting, power-folding mirrors with puddle lights, panoramic sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, 30-color enhanced ambient interior lighting, perforated V-Tex leatherette seats, massaging front seats, memory front seats, rear center armrest, an adjustable cargo area floor, and an upgraded 12-inch infotainment system.
On both trims of the ID.4, rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
There’s only one option package available, and you can only get it on the Pro S trim. The Gradient Package ($1,500) adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a black roof, silver anodized roof rails, silver roof accents, and silver C pillars.
The Volkswagen ID.4 is available with one or two electric motors, and they all use an 82-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The single-motor models are rear-wheel drive, and dual-motor models have all-wheel drive.
The range of the ID.4 is good enough for the daily commute for most drivers, but rivals including the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E both have a longer maximum range. The range of the smaller Chevrolet Bolt EUV is similar to the ID.4.
For 2022, the RWD VW ID.4 Pro has a max range estimated at 280 miles. The AWD ID.4 Pro comes in at an estimated 251 miles.
Note: The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 now comes with three years of unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast chargers at no added cost.
