"Of 17 New Car's I've Owned This One Is the BEST"

I have been driving since 1969 and have owned 17 new vehicles since. A number of them premium vehicles. This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that I've found to be 100% pure joy. The seats are premium to the core. Comfortable beyond anything I've sat in including a top Volvo I owned which I thought had the best seats ever. The overall ergonomic design is near genius and unlike the Tesla I sat in made so much more sense. The ride quality is near sumptuous as it soaks up road defects very nicely indeed but still handles unlike ANY SUV is capable of without leaning into turns, so it's a real fun driving experience. I felt the Infotainment system to be a joy as well. The sound is a definite step beyond the previous 2020 Tiguan SEL I owned. All the features accessible from the screen is very extensive to say the least and easy to navigate. The AC and even the heat are surprisingly effective delivering either cold or heat on demand, NO waiting. The lights are something else altogether. I have the Pro S and the front lights follow where you are steering for best view. Also some light is spread out to the sides of the vehicle for even a better idea what you are driving into and near. The poor weather light option in the menu (which takes the place of a fog light) is another world of view. Cuts right through ground fog and yet provides even more actual light to the road as well. The storage space is tremendous and there is NO such need for a so called "frunk" which frankly will compromise the front end collision safety. VW also carefully designed it's front end in this manner to allow for superior safety both for the passengers as well as a person that might be hit by it. At 85mph it is near whisper quiet where you can easily hold a conversation or near your music or news on the radio without that annoying engine buzz. Electric has changed my life for the better. My average costs for a so called full charge from 20% to 90% is just over $4.00, a far cry from an equivalent charge for the gas of over $70.00. All I can say is one test drive will convince the majority of folks that this is THE alternative to all other types of vehicles. I test drove a Mach E Ford and along with a Tesla felt the ride quality was definitely better with the VW. There are a lot more dealers to deal with for VW as well which was also a factor.

Critical Review

"Too Many Bugs and Poor Design"

The ID.4 is smooth, responsive steering and good pep. The cons are that there are major design flaws. The backup camera is poor quality and is poorly placed on the rear of the car. It quickly collects dirt. Visibility at night with the backup camera is 20% at best. The infotainment system is horrible. The screen will lock up or go blank rendering you unable to operate the climate, navigation, or audio system. By design, the controls for sound are not visible at night. It is not equipped with lighting. Voice navigation/command is the worst ever. I have had my car for 18 months and I don't even try to use it because it does not respond to any commands and instead begin spurting out instructions on what commands you can use (of which none work). The handsfree liftgate operates sporadically at best. Interior light work intermittently as well. I accidentally pressed the SOS but and got an error message. The ID.4 looks good inside and out. I wish it worked, but as for now; ID-4 stands for Inadequate Design 4 or Idiotic Design 4. Take your choice. In summary I do not recommend the ID.4 at this point maybe the 2023 or 2024 model will do better. There has been promises of software updates, but none so far. I have a Tesla, which get updates frequently and not one in 1 1/2 years (2 model years mind you). Thee are other good choices out there and until Volkswagen figures out how to correct the numerous problems I've mentioned and properly train the technicians at local dealerships, I suggest you look at other EV's.

New ID4 1st edition.

When I bought the car I was loved it. That lasted a couple of weeks. Every since then it has been nothing but trouble. Been in the shop more times than I can count. I only have 18,000 miles on it and will be taking it back to the shop as soon as I can get another appointment. Totally unreliable, still needs recall fixed for over 8 months. Every time I get it back from the shop it is good for a couple of weeks at best.

Feature-rich vehicle ideal for short drives

This is our first EV vehicle, and it's been a pleasure to own thus far. Getting a charger installed was more affordable than expected, and we received some relief from our electricity provider for getting the outlet installed and switching to a time-of-use plan. The entire move has saved us money overall, and the increases in consumption have been negligible. We have the Pro S trim. It's a great vehicle used by two drivers. We use it for taking the kids to school, going to work, running errands, and making short road trips (under 150 miles round trip). Mapping out chargers is simple not as daunting as anticipated. Quick, smooth, and reactive drive. Has handled incredibly well in slick conditions (will report back in the winter). We have two car seats in the back, and we still have plenty of room in the front (we're tall!). Packed with tech, which is a little intimidating at first, but reliable once you're acclimated. The only thing bothering us is the proximity sensors are a little sensitive when reversing. It's slammed the breaks a couple times while backing out of the garage when we first got it. Overall, the VW ID.4 has been a great family vehicle for us thus far. Plenty of trunk space allows for quick trips. Spending less time and money at the pump has been huge for us. I would recommend the ID.4 to anyone looking for a vehicle to zip around town in. Longer trips are possible, but may require more planning to chart out charger locations.

Hauling, range, and $&@“!? Auto braking

I love driving my ID4 awd Pro but: The range is less than advertised, 240 or so. Hauling a light trailer well within capacity drops the range in less than half. The auto braking is awful!! Scary! Terrifying! Dangerous! Fix this, VW, before someone gets hurt.

2023 ID.4 Pro

Pros: The car is amongst the few that is fully qualified for the federal $7500 credit and the $2000 state rebate. Good and firm ride. Quiet and roomy cabin. Overall, enjoyable to drive and ride in. Cons: Alarming QC issues where fit and finish are far from optimal (such as the driver's side airbag panel popping out, defective replacement sensors, etc.). Infotainment system is lagging in terms of responsiveness. Two window opening/closing buttons instead of four. Overall, notable workmanship issues and certain design-related flaws.

Keep Away from ID4
Pros

Stylish. Nice interiors. Free charging

Cons

Battery issue, wait for repairs. Cheap plastic

I’ve had my 2021 PRO S for almost 2 years now. Range was so-so but with the free charging for 3 years at the electrify America charging stations I was not complaining. It started taking a dark turn towards end of 2023. After months of waiting the recall service was scheduled. it took 6 months followup and 1 instance of wrong scheduling by the recall service customer care/ mis-communication with the service center to finally schedule the software update service. A week after the recall service my car wouldn’t start (with around 60% battery juice left) from a normal stop at a rest area/ gas station in Parsippany. Awaited for the tow truck for 2 hours which wasn’t completely covered by VW. I should appreciate the person who towed the car, after 1 hour of work he was finally able to get the car on the truck( please note that if you think you can tow your EV easily, you are probably wrong) . Paul miller VW service like all other VW showrooms were in back order for loaners. I was 90 miles away from home without a loaner and not much help from VW. After 10 days waiting for my car service I got a loaner, they found out that the 12 V battery was gone. 2 months later one main battery cell has failed. They are not allowed to do service at every center so I need to get it 30 miles from home at a service station that can only repair 1 car at a time??! Please keep away from this Car and if possible VW.

Love this vehicle!

I've had 3 EV's (Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, and my current VW ID.4) in the past 5 years and all have been great vehicles. We wanted a larger vehicle and the ID.4 is a great car. The technology is awesome. The ride is smooth and comfortable. It is very spacious and comes with 3 years of free charging with Electrify America, which has nearly 4,000 stations across the country. We will soon get the Tesla Supercharging adapters, which will open up another 15,000 stations for charging. Visibility around the vehicle is very good, especially when driving in heavy traffic on the freeway. Some people don't like the touchscreen options, but I love them. Things like heated seats, heated steering wheel and temperature controls can be adjusted by voice command from the driver or passenger. It is by far the best value for the price than any of the other EV's I've purchased or looked at. With dealer incentives and the $7500 government rebate that I qualified for in 2023, the overall price was less than $40K. Other than rotating tires, I have not invested a dime in maintenance over the past 5 years and I actually get free tire rotations at Discount Tire. The safety features are outstanding. I am extremely happy with my 2023 VW ID.4 Pro S.

Beautiful ride…!
Pros

Doesn’t look like an EV

Cons

Slow infotainment system

Awesome electric vehicle. Owned a 2017 Chevy Bolt before the ID4 which Chevy gave me back my $ in full in 2021 due to battery fires. VW ID4 is the way to go no issues at all.
