Positive Review

"Phenomenal Car-Even in An Accident!"

I never intended on purchasing a Volkswagen Golf back in 2015, but after reading several reviews I felt I had to give it a look. The Golf has everything one can need for basic transportation. Want a fuel efficient car? My Golf averages 34.5 MPG in mixed driving across New Jersey (highways and urban driving). Want a car that can handle the freeway? The Golf feels like it has more than enough power with its 1.8L turbo four, easily handling highway speeds and passing traffic with aplomb. Want a comfortable car? The Golf is quieter, rides better, and has better seats than most luxury cars that are twice as expensive. Want a car that can haul stuff and people? Last summer my Golf took four friends and all the gear for our beach encampment down to the Jersey Shore at least six times and no one complained about space. But the real reason that I am utterly satisfied with my purchase of a Mk7 Golf comes from safety. My Golf does not have any of the optional extras, but when it was rear ended three weeks ago so hard it was thrown into a roadside retaining wall, it kept both myself and my girlfriend safe and left us in better shape than the man who rear ended us in his 50,000 dollar Infiniti Q50. The picture above proves such. If it were not for the Golf, my girlfriend and I may have had to been brought to the hospital on gurneys in an ambulance. Because of it, we actually were able to drive ourselves three miles to the hospital (it later had to be towed because the seatbelts locked out). Sure, my Golf isn't perfect. My biggest gripe, the automatic transmission, seems to always upshift too eagerly and gets rather confused in urban driving. And not having an actual USB port and instead having to shell out money for the Volkswagen proprietary USB cable is rather irksome. But those are small quibbles. If you're looking for a safe, fun to drive, fast, and practical car, look no further. I would handedly recommend a Golf to all my friends.

"Worst car I ever owned"

It was in the dealer 4 times in a year for repairs. Gas mileage not that good.

What a clever Auto!
Pros

Fun to drive. Quiet engine.

Cons

Headlight should be brighter.

No issue whotsoever over the almost 3 years ownership. I love the precise steering, responsivness in any of the 6 gears as much as the low fuel consumption. The collission avoidance system saved me from a bumper run-in once. Comfort? Absolutely, within the limits of its size.

Best vehicle ever
Pros

Fun to drive, fuel efficient, spacious, style

Cons

The TDI motor and DSG are meant for efficiency

I bought the TDI and I won't buy anything else. The diesel isnt the quickest but can maintain exceptional fuel mileage. The handling is what you would expect with a compact. Light and agile with a 50/50 weight ratio. All you could ever need in a car is fit into a compact.

Love this little VW
Pros

Comfortable, easy to maneuver, eye catcher

Cons

Diesel is no longer available in the USA

I have the Golf SEL TDi and love it, made a trip from AZ to MN and back, 2 adults, 2 large dogs, and luggage, set the cruise on 80-85 (for the most part) and averaged 44 mpg. That so called "diesel gate" was a crock of BS and should have never happened. The rest of the world still gets these awesome efficient engines, but the US doesn't.

Absolutely love my Golf
Pros

Great car

Cons

You’ll get attached

I absolutely love my 2017 Golf TSI. I’ve had it since I was a senior in high school and it has been so reliable. I’ve had a recall once and Volkswagen took care of it no big deal. Only Con I would say is that people will try to race you all the time because they assume you have a GTI or R Golf. So if you’re looking for a Golf will high Horsepower, I recommend the GTI or R.

The most disappointing car I ever had.
Pros

Handling is still good.

Cons

Plenty (see my detailed review).

I got a 2021 Golf as a replacement of my 2017 Golf, a decision I deeply regret. I've been a Golf lover for a while, considering it an excellent car per $1 of price. The 2021 model is a completely different thing. After three months of driving it I must conclude that I hate it. Here are just a few things that are wrong with it: - The 1.4 engine (vs. previous 1.8) is underpowered with a very narrow range. It has virtually no power until 2,000 revs and "deflates" shortly after 4,000 revs. It vibrates like a diesel, especially while idling at a stop light. To summarize: in the 2021 model you get a smaller, weaker and overall less pleasant engine than in 2017 which has the same real-life fuel consumption (see below) for the same money. - The fuel efficiency that VW claims only holds up if you barely touch the accelerator, but because the engine is so weak, you have to push it a lot harder just to keep up with traffic. And when you do, the fuel consumption goes up to about the same level as my old 2017 Golf. Which had a more powerful and much more pleasant 1.8 engine. - The muffler is awfully loud, and when the engine is running at about 1,500 revs under mild load, it comes into resonance with the engine which produces very annoying noise. - The sunroof is creaky, although my 2017 model had the exact same problem. No improvement here. - The engine bay has zero sound insulation in the 2021 model. Again, the smaller and weaker engine means you have to rev it much higher, which means noisier drive. - The trunk has a lot less sound insulation than before. From the driver's seat I can clearly hear the exhaust sound, resonating muffler, tire noise... - The steering wheel is no longer upholstered with real leather, but with some kind of pseudo which appears to have been made out of recycled plastic bags. It feels rough and overall unpleasant to touch. - The handles that adjust the height of the front seats are flimsy and wobble left and right. My wife and I take turns driving this car, and being of different heights, have to adjust the seat every time we switch. I already had cases when a pump of the handle didn't have any effect (must have skipped over a gear occasionally), waiting for it to break altogether to take for a warranty repair. - The lane assist so far mostly tries to stop me from changing lanes in normal course, and when lane markings on the road suddenly disappear or the lane widens, tends to freak out and erratically steer the car to the side. I can keep going, but tired of typing. On a plus side, I must admit that the overall handling of the car is as good as before (oddly VW hasn't ruined it). And the blind spot monitoring is better in the 2021 model (in 2017 it had very dim lights which made it essentially useless on a sunny day). Conclusion: if you care about how a car drives, don't buy the 2021 Golf - you'll be disappointed. On the other hand, if you don't care about how a car drives, you'll be better off getting something else: for the same money it will be at least more loaded with features - so don't buy it either. Really no reason to choose the 2021 Golf over its competition.
