Positive Review
It fits our lifestyle, it fits our family, and it fits down our alley! The Alltrack is most commonly compared to the Crosstrek and the Outback, but with its size positioned between the two, it is a perfect blend of easy-to-drive size with great cargo capacity. I do wish backseat room was a bit deeper, as a rear facing carseat is very snug up against the front seats, but possible. The interior looks and feels great in most places, with wide area of soft-touch finishes and where they do have hard plastics, they dont look too cheap. There are a lot of controls within the layers of infotainment software, but it doesnt take long to understand them and the knobs and buttons are simple. Steering wheel buttons are a bit less intuitive, but the wheel itself is nicely appointed and the D-shape is a nice touch. I love that the cd player slot is hidden in the glove compartment, love the lined storage in the doors and that the navigation can be displayed between the tach and speedometer but I do wish there were a few more storage cubbies up front. Electronics I could do without: motorized rear camera flip-up behind the logo (its noisy), and convoluted method to raise the windshield wipers off the windshield, and parking assist buttons present when the car doesnt have the package! Overall, the interior feels more upscale than its segment suggests and is very satisfying. When I test drove the car, I was most surprised by the ride; it rides well for being a compact car that simply been extended, although the sound and feel of the suspension will sometimes remind you that you are in a compact car. I love the engine; it shifts fast, acceleration is good in Normal mode but fun in Sport mode. A bonus was that I could create a custom mode that stiffens the steering but maintains the normal driving acceleration. Other reviews have questioned the usefulness of the Offroad mode, but Ive found it very helpful in the snow as it changes the gears, acceleration, and power to the rear wheels, and the Descent Assist actually works. The many options to drive the car (driving modes, quick shift to sport mode, manual shifting, paddle shifters) is impressive. I love the clean design of the interior. I chose the Alltrack over the Sportwagen not only for the AWD in higher trim options, but I felt the added cladding and styling cues were subtle but much better looking than the Sportwagen. The Alltrack is conservatively styled but its done well and helps maintain the great utility of the interior. The panoramic moonroof is impressive. Its unfortunate that no blind spot detection, power liftgate, or remote start are not available, and daytime running lights only offered with an expensive lighting package. Other cars I considered; Subaru Impreza Sport and Crosstrek (both smaller than desired), Mazda 3 Hatch and CX-3 (also too small), Kia Optima (preferred a wagon/hatch utility), VW Tiguan (too small). All of these are stronger in driving dynamics in their segment. It came down to the Mazda CX-5 and the VW Golf Alltrack. Although Id leaned toward the CX-5 for a while, the Alltrack won for its more car-like dimensions and dynamics (although the CX-5 is great to drive), transmission, Apple CarPlay, panoramic moonroof, and my wife much preferred it. Overall, I love the car so far as it feels substantial, dynamic, and upscale for its segment. Lets hope the reliability is strong too!
Critical Review
I purchased my 2019 Golf AllTrack in May of 2020 with 10 miles on it. Before I bought... I read all the online reviews... looked it up in the consumer magazines for reliability... and was decided that this car was the perfect car for me! After 3-months of ownership it has spent 6 weeks...and still counting in the service department of my local dealership. I wish it was something as simple (although annoying) as a radio that doesn't work... maybe the back-up camera ... or even a inoperable sunroof... but no... it's an engine problem that they still can't figure out... think traveling down the freeway at 60 mph and the engine cuts power and you can't go over 30 mph. So three and a half months... 4 tows... and 6-weeks I'm still in a loaner car... now... throw in Covid-19... and Volkswagen's insistence on trying to chase down a fix... well... the whole experience is a little hairy at least. Really... I just wouldn't repeat it... I should've listened to my dad and bought a Toyota.

We have a 2018 VW Alltrack S that we bought when it had 10k miles on it. It now has 72k miles. We were a bit worried about reliability, but overall it has been a good car that has never left us stranded. We recently had to replace the turbo wastegate, which turned out to be a bigger hassle (and more expensive) than I would've liked. Otherwise, we've had no reliability issues. The car performs well, whether driving backroads, going slightly "offroad" (like the rutted dirt road going to my dad's house), or in inclement weather (rain or snow). Ours is a manual transmission, and it's fun to drive--handles well and has plenty of torque down low. Unbeknowst to us, the prior owner installed APR Stage 1 tuning, which gives ours a small bump in hp and torque. That power is nice to have when merging or passing on the highway or driving a little aggressively on backroads, but it may have played a role in the turbo wastegate failure. Overall, good car. Probalby not as reliable as a Toyota Camry or Honda Civic, but AWD, manual transmission wagons basically don't exist anymore, so we're gonna hang onto it.
goes
faster would always be wonderful
These are wonderful. I am a maniac and love to drive fast, so I drive cars that aren't anymore. I cant do it. This car, satisfies my need to fly if I have too. Never have gotten it stuck and really rolls.
36 mpg highway
27 mpg city streets
4motion smooth turns DSG transmission smooth and responsive. all around pleasure to drive with roomy interior
Great space, 30+ MPG, has all the storage I need, great ground clearance, had one moon-roof leak repair and only visits the dealer for oil changes. Also looks great and the VW bike rack with the lower roof height allows me to put my bike on the roof without any ladder needed.
Everything
had a sunroof leak, need to blow out the channels
My Alltrack SE, 6sp Manual handles great on curves and is a blast to drive. It's great in snow, good on gas and can haul lots of stuff for it's size. It's also appointed very nicely- love the saddle brown. Everyone comments how pleasantly surprised they are once they get inside. I especially appreciate the 6yr/72K bumper to bumper warranty that came with it. I just had a new turbo put in free of charge (as it should be).
Fun to drive on highway and in town.
I wish the steering wheel would warm up in cols we
Amazing performance. I can be first and ahead in green. Comfortable and serves all my needs. Great for taking my grandkids.
Great in the snow
Could be a bit faster
We bought the VW Alltrack GLS it has all the bells and whistles. Including lane assist, adaptive cruise control, apple car play on a beautiful screen, it is slightly lifted to give a little more clearance which is nice. It handles amazing and the seats are very comfortable. The panoramic sunroof is beautiful.

I traded a jeep renegade on this best decision I have made , I live in Minnesota and AWD is a must have the drive train on this vehicle is incredible the 1.8L motor mated to VW's very best 6spd manuel transmission and the 4motion AWD system is a dream come true incredibly capable in the winter , this car is a real live unicorn with A high build quality, installed a premium ceramic window tint, premium optional tires ( Yokohama avid ascend LX tires) , splash guards, 3m paint protection film. Can't say enough about this vehicle.
