"Super get about town or medium distance drive car"

Look, you're not going to get the ride or bells and whistles of a BMW, Mercedes or Cadillac. I bought the Yaris (in '07 at 12K) as a second car, for my work as a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross. On average, I pick up blood donations 4 to 8 times a month in the Buffalo, NY area and drive them to Rochester, NY. These trips average 140 miles round trip. Living in NY, the extortionist tax state, gas prices are always 20 plus cents more than the national average. My Yaris is a miser on gas, averaging 40 /- mpg on the road, depending on weather/traffic conditions, as expected. It now has over 68000 miles and the only things I replaced were front brake pads and plugs (myself - they're easily accessible) at 50000 miles and front tires (shoulda rotated). Now the muffler is grumbling like my beloved wife) and I am going to buy a new one. My Yaris is a 5 speed manual, base car. It served its intended purpose well. Quick manuevering, sporty ride (that's "stiff" to those wanting a marshmallow ride), drives well in snow (I live in Buffalo), reliable - has always started and gone even being non-garage housed, and the hatchback provides all the room I need to transport the coolers and boxes of blood I deliver. I would not venture on a cross country trip in it but that's what I have my Dodge Grand Caravan for - to tow my utility trailer, my mini popup camper and to drive my 5 granddaughters around. If you are looking for a zip about town, economical vehicle, buy this guy!!!!

"Biggest Mistake of my life!"

Where do I begin? Had this for 3 years and 36000 miles and a HUGE weight is off my shoulders now that I'm rid of it! The design is terrible. I'm not going to list the plethora of nit pick design flaws as that would take hours. I will instead write the biggies. The car fogs so bad it is a hazard to drive, and the defrost doesn't do a thing. I have had to pull over and manually defog my car more than I can count, even multiple times in one drive! I got stuck in less than 2 inches of snow! I was late to work 3 times in a week because I couldn't get out of my driveway during minor snowstorms! I've nearly been in several accidents due to the problems with control in the snow. The passengers seat has an incredibly loud and obnoxious ding anytime the seatbelt is not in with weight on the seat. Problem is that it is so sensitive that I once had it go off with nothing more than my lunch on the seat for the entire ride! (no, I'm not eating 100lbs of food for lunch FYI) Toyota financial is a terrible company and my credit suffered because they failed to set up auto withdraw on FIVE seperate occasions. The gas mileage was less than my wife's 04 Elantra, we tested. Hers averaged out on the same drive at 35mpg, this got 31. That car is far more roomy, comfortable and powerful to boot. The power is SO little that I have had a hard time getting up to 40 MPH on the highway if there is a hill with out worrying about blowing the engine. Goes into overdrive at 25 on any decent hill!! It is cramped and uncomfortable Something in the design makes it not only fog heavily but also makes the frost form on BOTH SIDES of the windshields! I have to scrape my windows twice every morning, inside and out! The auto locks malfuncionted from the day it was purchased. Brought it back after TWO HOURS of owning it and the wouldn't fix it! Said it wasn't covered in the warranty. The AC vents are right behind the only cup holders, so if you have a drink you don't feel the AC or heat. Speaking of AC, you don't really feel it that well WITHOUT a drink; and don't use it if you want to get more than 28MPG and have enough power to beat a Geo Metro off the line. I know, I had a Metro. With the AC on the Yaris I really think my Metro had more power. If you live someplace flat, dry, and hot this car would be fine, economic and smart. Otherwise avoid it like THE PLAGUE!

Quality!
Pros

Reliable as can be. Cheap!!

Cons

Slow and uncomfortable for long drives.

I bought a 2011 Yaris with 123k miles on it, and it feels brand new. Oil change is clean, alignment is fine. I love this thing. If your belt squeals like mine did at startup, turn the key slower...

Best car I've owned.
Pros

Insane Value, Reliable, Nimble, Inexpensive, Fun

Cons

Underpowered :(

FOR CONTEXT: * I also own a Camry XLE and a G37x * I am in love with my 2010 Yaris Sedan 5 Speed Manual, even 10 years later. I am the second owner and bought this car at about 40,000mi (for about $7,500). This car has endured mostly city driving with a few trips cross country, and has been running like clockwork with nothing but basic maintenance, and one clutch replacement done at around 140,000mi. I've carried around tools, furniture, people... you name it, and it has never given me a major issue, never left me stranded on the side of the road, and has always started up on the first try. It's also great on fuel, has plenty of cabin space (enough for four people to sit comfortably), adequate storage (especially with the folding back seats), AC and heat still work great, and the interior has held up exceptionally well, with no cracked or faded dash or door panels. Admittedly, it's rather barebones when it comes to extra features and its overall simple design, but that only adds to its charm. And, it more than makes up for it with it's relatability, affordability and availability of parts, and LACK of things which could break. I drive my Yaris spiritedly and regularly enjoy pushing this car to its (106hp) limits, and it handles the abuse surprisingly well. From dumping the clutch, ripping the parking brake, and pushing top speed, nothing seems to phase this car. She still shifts like a dream, is fairly comfortable, and capable of long trips without overheating or mechanical issues. Although, on VERY long trips the stock seats can be uncomfortable and the road noise/feel can be fatiguing, but that is to be expected of a vehicle in this class. I have only done two mods so far which have been huge quality of life improvements. The first one would be installing a rear sway bar (from Toyota for $160) which made a perceivable difference in how the car feels when cornering by reducing body roll and stiffening up the back end. I also installed aftermarket projector headlights as the stock ones do leave much to be desired, and Toyota headlights (of the era) are notorious for fading over time. The ONLY real gripe I have with the Yaris is it's lack of HP, even comparatively with other subcompacts from this era, the Yaris' acceleration can be dissatisfying at times. Understandably, it is a 1.5 liter, inline four, from 1997 that only makes 106hp, but a result, you probably won't be winning many races in a straight line with this car. In conclusion, despite the underpowered engine, I would still give the Toyota Yaris Sedan (Manual 5 Speed) an excellent rating and would recommend it to anyone looking for a daily that's low maintenance, easy to drive, and going to last a long time, meanwhile still being an enjoyable enough experience. It's a jack of all trades that would make a solid first car, work car, or even just a backup car that you know will start and preform anytime, no matter the weather. If all else were the same, only the car were faster, it would be an easy 6/5 stars. I've definitely gotten my moneys worth, many times over, with this car. If only I could buy a few more of these...

Best purchase, ever!

I'm an original owner of a 2007 Yaris Sedan. Here I am 17 years after purchasing this vehicle and not only is it still going strong, but it has needed very minimal maintenance or repairs over the years. I don't intend on ever selling it.

Absolutely excellent!

Absolutely excellent! It has a little over 275,000 miles and it’s running well. It has had oil and spark plug changes. I have done only basic maintenance. I highly recommend this vehicle.

Best car I've ever owned.

Bought it at 50,000 now I have 270,000 miles on it. Only this year have I had to get major work done. Had to replace the alternator and radiator. And those repairs cost me about $600 each. Prior to this just routine maintenance. At 230,000 it started to need oil changes more frequently but no leak, just age. Otherwise I love this car like a loyal pet. Yes it looks quirky but everything is functional. The cupholders are in front of the vents but I love this feature because it keeps your drinks cool in summer and coffee hot in winter. There's plenty of other cupholders if you want to get the full air. The car sits higher so it doesn't scrape the ground on bumps. Lots of room inside the cabin. Great on fuel. Never had a problem with the AC when i lived in Florida or lack of grip on snow in NY. No snow tires needed, just all weather. I frequently have 5 people in my car and they have loads of leg room. Trunk is also roomy. My car has plenty of admirers, my mechanic included. They tell me it'll make at least 400k.

Best little car!!
Pros

Comfy seats, great gas mileage, lots of space

Cons

Wind noise, bumpy ride

I bought my 2010 Yaris 4 door hatchback new in 2010. It’s now 2023 and my car has 227,000 miles on it. This car has always started, every single time. Super reliable, easy to park, with an amazing amount of space for a small car. I love the domed roof because there is ample headroom, and the back seats fold down and create a ton of space. Things I’ve moved in my Yaris include a full sized dresser and a twin size mattress. The main downside of this car is the noise when you roll down windows. It creates some kind of suction vortex thing that is really hard on the ears. I’ve confirmed this with friends who also own this model. Also, it’s a bumpy ride, because it’s not built to be the smoothest car you’ve ever driven. Honestly I wish they still made them. This car is truly a gem, and I’ll probably end up donating mine because I want something bigger at this point.
