Hybrid Variation Available
By Eric Brandt
Updated January 30, 2025
When the Toyota Tundra received an overdue redesign, the first-ever Tundra Hybrid was introduced with an i-FORCE MAX hybrid twin-turbo V6 engine producing significantly more power and torque than its non-hybrid counterpart (reviewed separately). Naturally, it also returns better fuel economy.
Many competitive full-size trucks are on the market, but the only other hybrid is the Ford F-150 with the optional PowerBoost hybrid V6. The Tundra Hybrid makes a bit more power and torque, but the F-150 Hybrid is more fuel-efficient. It’s also worth noting that the diesel engines available in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ram 1500 are more efficient than the Tundra Hybrid.
The Tundra Hybrid is an excellent truck for drivers looking for good fuel economy without compromising strong capabilities. Still, you won’t find one in the form of an affordable, no-nonsense work truck. Only the more premium and expensive trims of the Tundra are available with the hybrid powertrain. If you have the budget, this big Toyota truck has a lot to offer.
2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid CrewMax pricing starts at $47,676 for the Tundra Hybrid CrewMax Limited Pickup 4D 5 1/2 ft, which had a starting MSRP of $57,695 when new. The range-topping 2022 Tundra Hybrid CrewMax Capstone Pickup 4D 5 1/2 ft starts at $50,586 today, originally priced from $75,925.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid CrewMax models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
The new Tundra uses a fully boxed ladder frame with a coil-spring live axle rear suspension rather than the old school leaf springs in the previous generation of the Tundra. The result is a comfortable and compliant ride that makes the Tundra feel like a more modern truck. It’s still no sports car on a winding road, but its handling is more engaging than you might expect for a full-size pickup.
As for the hybrid engine, it prioritizes performance over efficiency. It makes 437 horsepower and a whopping 583 lb-ft of torque. This engine gives the Tundra a lot of energy and pretty strong towing and payload capabilities. The Capstone’s cabin, thanks to a laminated acoustic windshield, is remarkably quiet.
The fuel economy rating (up to 20 city/24 highway mpg) is better than the non-hybrid Tundra, but not by much. If you’re looking for the best fuel economy in a full-size, non-diesel truck, the Ford F-150 Hybrid (up to 25 mpg city/25 highway mpg) is more efficient and has similar performance numbers.
Since it’s only available with the CrewMax cab, every variant of the Tundra Hybrid is spacious, with plenty of legroom and headroom in both rows of seats. The base Limited trim has SofTex faux leather seats, and every other trim of the Tundra Hybrid has genuine leather.
Like the exterior design, the interior changes a bit depending on the trim. The 1794 model offers your choice of Saddle Brown or Rich Cream leather plus American walnut trim. The top Capstone trim has a unique 2-tone leather interior. The TRD Pro trim has a more rugged interior with numerous TRD touches.
One of our favorite parts of this interior is the 14-inch infotainment system, which is standard on the Limited model and above. It’s user-friendly, has good voice-control integration, and has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also has built-in Apple Music, which means you don’t even need your iPhone in the truck to enjoy your tunes.
It’s worth mentioning that the non-hybrid CrewMax Tundra models have convenient under-seat storage in the back. However, this space is taken up by the hybrid battery in the Tundra Hybrid.
The Tundra got a much-needed redesign for the 2022 model year with an all-new chassis and look. It has a more boxy aesthetic than its predecessor that looks rugged yet premium. The exterior trim, wheels, and gaping maw of a grille vary depending on the trim. For example, the 1794 and Capstone luxury trims use lots of chrome, and the TRD Pro model has a decidedly off-roady look.
Because of the packaging of the hybrid battery, the Tundra Hybrid is only available in CrewMax configurations. You can get it with a 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed. If you want the smaller Double Cab or the 8.1-foot bed, you’ll have to go with a non-hybrid Tundra.
As for the truck’s size, it’s similar to crew cab models of other full-size trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500.
BETTER POWER AND EFFICIENCY
The Tundra Hybrid improves power, torque, and fuel economy compared to the non-hybrid Tundra.
TRD PRO
The hybrid-only TRD Pro trim is the best off-roader in the Tundra lineup with 4-wheel drive, Fox shocks, extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and much more.
Since the hybrid powertrain isn’t available on the SR and SR5 trims of the Toyota Tundra, every Tundra Hybrid is pretty well-appointed. The base Limited Hybrid is equipped with SofTex faux leather upholstery, 8-way power front seats, a 14-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 safety tech suite bundles many driver-assistance tech features like automatic emergency braking, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, and automatic high beams. On top of that, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer merge warning come standard.
Climbing up the model range brings more luxurious features to the new Tundra Hybrid. The Platinum trim comes with a pretty big price jump, but it adds a more premium front grille, dark gray alloy wheels, a power panoramic moonroof, leather seats, 10-way power front seats, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
The 1794 trim has an equipment list similar to the Platinum model, but with a Western-inspired appearance package with chrome exterior trim and Rich Cream or Saddle Brown leather with American walnut wood-grain trim. You also get a trailer backup guide with straight path assist.
The two top trims of the Tundra Hybrid, the TRD Pro and the Capstone, come standard with 4-wheel drive and have very different attitudes. The TRD Pro trim is the best off-roader in the lineup. It boasts TRD Pro off-road suspension with Fox shocks, a 1.1-inch front lift, an electronic locking rear differential, 18-inch BBS wheels with Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control, a unique “TOYOTA” front grille with an LED light bar and marker lights, and a JBL 12-speaker premium audio system.
Finally, the Capstone model is the first true luxury pickup truck from Toyota, competing with the likes of the GMC Sierra 1500 Denali and the Ford F-150 Limited. It’s loaded with 22-inch dark chrome wheels, a unique grille, semi-aniline leather seats, a 2-tone white and black interior with American walnut wood-grain trim, a head-up display, and power running boards.
The Toyota Tundra Hybrid is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 mated to an electric motor-generator. The result is more power, more torque, and better fuel economy than the non-hybrid Tundra. It sends power to the rear wheels or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Thanks to the performance boost of the hybrid powertrain, the Tundra Hybrid has muscular towing capabilities. The tow rating depends on the trim, but it pulls up to 11,450 pounds with RWD and 11,175 with 4WD. For reference, the Ford F-150 Hybrid can tow up to 12,700 pounds.
3.5-liter hybrid twin-turbocharged V6 with electric motor-generator
437 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm
583 lb-ft of torque @ 2,400 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy (estimated): 20/24 mpg (Limited, Platinum, 1794 RWD), 19/22 mpg (Limited 4WD, Platinum 4WD, 1794 4WD, Capstone), 19/21 (TRD Pro)
