Positive Review
The car was made in Japan; I had to wait one year for it. It is excellent condition for its age and mileage. Would make a great car for a teen in house or second car. Gas mileage about 25 in town and up to 30 on road. Smogged 8/3/15; oil changed 8/3/15; registration current; seats have been covered for its life. I loved this car.
Critical Review
I currently fill up with $40. and it last me 2 weeks or more. But I work less than 3 miles from home. I bought this car from a private owner last year. There is an anoying rattle that I can not find out where it comes from. Usually when I press on the brakes. I currently had the timing belt and valve cover changed. $$$. I bought with the inspection expired, but I thought it was nothing. Thank God for Air Check Texas. To pass emission the bill was $400. plus. Timing belt was close to $500. So I already have $1000 in it that I could not really afford. Comfort is not a strong point. I feel every bump and pot hole, and that is going 30 mph or less. Very bouncy vehicle. But, all around a decent vehicle once I get the oil pump leak fixed, and fix the rattling prob.

I had a 2019 Toyota rav 4 and it is a great vehicle
inexpensive to keep up and upgrade
not a luxury car but confort is unbelievable
so, I bought myself a new little toy and decide to take a chance with this 1998 Rav4 with only 155k original miles, and I had nothing but great things to say about it, this was one of the smartest investments I had made as this SUV at this age needs nothing !!! so I start upgrading a few things here and there just to keep it around for many years to come and I'm totally in love with it totally recommend it.
I've had to change the timing belt twice, and the starter once. That's it in 25 years!! It's a 5 speed manual 2x4, allowing me to easily squeeze 35mpg in normal driving. It's a 4 cylinder, so it's rather lame with a full load going up hills, and it's take-off is .... well.... a let down... but for a great all-around family car that can reliably go on cross-country trips into the backcountry and beautifully through the snow, and as a 100% reliable go-to all-around-town car, it's awesome! It's worth next to nothing now on the open market but it's worth so much to me. Got some teens coming up through their permits... and it might become their car... so I'll have to teach them stick. But, hey, that should be something everybody learns. I love that car. Big debate what to do with it when we get a new car coming up soon ... but I think we'll keep it... somehow... somewhere... it's just too much of a devoted champ to turn our back on it now.
Bought mine new in the spring of 1998. Have never had a problem with it. Extremely reliable, and economical. Am leaving the state of California, for obvious reasons, and moving to Nevada. Have a car I use most lately. So giving up the RAV4. Makes me sad.
dual moon roofs
short wheel base can feel prett rough on bad roads
With two moon roofs- both pop up or remove completely and stores neatly in the rear door this little red fun machine is worthy of a summer ride to the beach or day tripping to outdoor fun whereever! Even this FWD gets me in and out of not so smooth roads with ease and the ground clearance gives me plenty of room to maneuver around in the wooded areas too! The flip up seats in the back make for very useful cargo room addition- the handling and ride is enjoyable for such a short wheel base.
I don’t want to buy just to find out how much value for this car. After know about that maybe I can decide if I want too.
Pros: Reliable, durable, reasonably fuel-efficient, glides through snow like a mountain goat, good turning radius. Cons: Rides like a truck (which it is).
This is the best car! But I need a head gasket ($2000)should I do it???very dependable but it’s a lot of $
