"One word "Awesome""

After wanting an FJ Cruiser ever since they first came in production I finally bought a 2007 well cared for pre-owned with 100k on it. I have not owned it long enough to speak of "reliability" but based on my research and reviews I am not worried about that. I have owned many Lexus cars/suv's over the years so I am familiar with Toyota reliability. I have owned many nice cars including Porsche over the years and I must say in the short time I have owned this FJ it is my favorite vehicle I have owned. It is just fun to drive, it looks great, etc, etc. Lets look at a few things that people bring up about the FJ. First is the "blind spot". If you adjust your mirrors correctly and buy some $2.00 blind spot mirrors for both side mirrors and pay attention to what you are doing it is not a factor at all. The simplicity of the interior design is what I LOVE about the vehicle. Mine has the basics I want/need AC, cruise, am/fm/cd, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, 4x4. If you want a luxury SUV look at Lexus or something else. This SUV is utilitarian by design and function. I have a 7yo son and love the ability to wash the inside out after a trip to the beach, park, etc. My biggest complaint is the lack of storage by means of an enclosed arm rest compartment. Their are some aftermarket companies that have options be even they are not what I would like or used to. I will be looking at some workarounds to fix the storage situation. With a vehicle their are usually trades off no matter what. Love the Lexus RX series (I owned one) but they are not designed for "off road" even with the AWD version. The Dodge Durango (owned one) has great storage and space front and rear but the over all look is not that appealing. I don't consider myself a gear head but I do like nice cars. I am 45 years old and my FJ gets compliments from young and old. Plan on being part of the FJ "fraternity" because as you pass other people in an FJ they will wave or stop and talk. Strangers will either look at you, nod, or simply start asking questions. In the end the FJ is AWESOME if you understand what you are buying and what it is. It has been a long time since I have owned a vehicle I was excited about driving and finding myself looking for reasons to drive somewhere. I feel like a 16 year old that just got his licenses and wants to drive everywhere all the time for no reason at all. My plan is keeping this SUV for a lifetime and letting my son in 9 years drive it when he turns 16. It is a SUV me and him can enjoy together tinkering, doing small repairs, and doing modifications. I think this is the type vehicle that becomes part of a family for generations. P

Critical Review

"Not the Best.... Not the Worst!!!!"

I loved this vehicle when I first took it for a test drive and bought it that day, got a ton of extras for it and planned on keeping it forever! Boy, how that has changed.... This vehicle has the immediate effect it needs to get people to buy it. Meaning that you'll love it on your initial reaction, but it gets old very quick and when it does, you will start picking out the faults that you never noticed from the beginning! This truck would be totally worth it if it sold for somewhere in the $18,000 to $20,000 price range, but for the close to $30,000 that they cost, I really can't say it is worth it, and heres why.... The interior looks nice, but it is extemely poor quality and things break easily, I've had to have the seats replaced twice because of the side adjustments snapping off, and the knobs on the dash replaced. The truck also rattles to death, it is full of cheap loose plastic parts and you can never find which one is making the rattle, the dealer couldn't find it either! The seats offer no lumbar support at all and it has no center console, so take it easy on turns or it will throw you out of your seat. The alternative is to get the arm rests which help a tad bit, not much.... and yes, Toyota will charge you extra for them! It isn't as rough of a ride as you would think, but if you live around uneven pavements, it will make you feel them. Also, don't plan on putting anyone in the back seat unless they are a small child, because if you are above 5 foot 8, you will have to put the seat back so far that no regular sized person can sit behind you. They also have some odd bending to do to get into the suicide doors without hitting their head on the latch that holds it. As far as MPG goes, I've heard countless people claim 17 to 23 MPG! I don't know how they drive, but I have never gotten more than 14 and it takes premium fuel, so I have never filled the tank for less than $65! It comes standard with an AUX input for iPod's, this is one of the few things Toyota did right, works like a charm! The stereo itself is decent, it's made by Toyota. The max volume is set at 80, but if you go above 40, it gets so high pitched that it will make your ears bleed, and you can fool with the controls all you want, but it will never be perfect, but it is still much better than some of the competitors! Another disappointment is the overall size. Despite the massive size and imposing look, it isn't very big or roomy inside at all. Cargo area is limited, as I mentioned, the rear seat is practically non-existant, and you don't sit up very high either, it feels safe, but doesn't feel big or commanding if thats what you like! The worst thing about it is the visibility, you can't see out the sides because of the pillars and the tire on the back takes up about 35% of the back window, so if it is dark, and you have to back up or merge, its basically a guessing game! So whats good about it? The capability.... I have had fun smashing through snow, dirt, over curbs for fun and the FJ has never come close to getting stuck, and I have the standard tires instead of the optional All-Terrains! The FJ shows off a lot, it has a techometer that displays inclines and such, which looks cool, but face it, when are you ever gonna use that? If you're about to flip over, do you really need a meter to tell you? In the end, if you're single and don't carry a lot of people and don't mind more of a rough rider instead of a refined vehicle, than I think you will like the FJ! If you have a family, kids, carry friends a lot, or just need space, this vehicle will turn sour quick! It will turn heads (not as much as it used to), and it will tear through anything.... But if you are driving the FJ, people are all going to call it the same thing, a Hummer poser, because in the end.... THAT'S WHAT IT IS!!!!

Unbeatable Icon

I would swear to this vehicle, the most stylish and safe midsize SUV you can buy, very comfortable to drive in Off road and on road, it feels like driving a Caddy while Off roading, it has few downsides that you forget when driving them, driver side visor has no mirror, no dome light on ceiling at the front, almost no legroom on back seat, this vehicle is perfect for 2 people, fuel economy is not as bad as a Jeep, BUT once when you drive you'll love it, very solid, very attractive and very sturdy SUV to own, keeps the price high, owners rarely will sell if they know what this is. Normally people who sell they have no clue or they are just Tesla drivers. That's the bottom line.

Fun Reliable Awesome!
Pros

Comfortable drive and style

Cons

Wish they still made them

I love this vehicle! It drives so much better than any other vehicle in its class. The smooth ride, quiet cab, and comfortable seats makes you forget you are driving an off road vehicle. Toyota should make these again but if they don’t, mine has 214,000 miles and I am looking forward to another 200k!! If you find one, buy it!! You won’t regret it!

Windshield replacement

I bought my 2010 FJ upgraded package, with the lift, fuel rims, tow package, cold air intake, roll side airbags, disc changer with the stock subwoofer, all traction options, including front, and rear locking diffs, Bilstein shocks, bulletproof undercarriage, with supports(bottom out protected), and probably a bunch of other things I forgot, about 3 years ago. Even though, I was looking for another Escalade, this vehicle was powerful, capable, smooth riding with MT’s, and after one test drive, at 97k, I was like a kid getting my first car, too! Then, after bringing it home, every day, I would find something cool, that I had not known about prior, every single day, for a month+!! I like the three chrono, on the dashboard, and flip alert, too!! Not a big fan of the tire pressure system(especially on the full-size spare), but that’s the norm now?! Easily reprogrammable key fobs, with a reset like, sequential ignition/door procession, but it appears that Toyota has discontinued the TRD Pro air filter, for the 2010 FJ 4.0(cold air)model, and the K&N is too thin, around the edges, for that specific model?! I’m wondering if this will continue to happen, with other parts, or if you could just use the ‘07-‘09 filter? Still has an older one in it, and now is about to roll over 137k!! Anyone else getting emails about selling their FJ, for over blue book?!lol No Way!! Jay’s FJ!!!

COMPLETE RUST BUCKET
Pros

good in the snow.

Cons

rusted out completely. brake lines rusted at 3000

If you purchase this car look for everything to rust!!! I had this shippped of to Rhode Island for a new frame. Everything had to be replaced. Before I knew it I was out of almost $20,000. The only reason why I put this much money in it was because there was only 27,000 miles on it. I would not recommend Toyota for any car whatsoever.

We have a family & this doesn’t work

This is the most impractical vehicle I’ve ever had. If you want to use this for anything other than a recreational vehicle I wouldn’t recommend this truck.

Best Ever!

I love my FJ! I’ve never kept a car this long and this was my first Toyota. Bought it new in 2010. Drove it from Florida to Texas the week I got it and the ride was smooth and comfortable for the 3 of us. This is my favorite ride ever and I’m 67. Can’t express how much I love my FJ!!

Jeep Styling w/ Toyota Reliability
Pros

Cool, dependable, not fancy but rugged enough...

Cons

Tight rear seating

Great dependable Toyota. I've had 2 Tacoma's w/ the 4.0L engine and the FJ is no different. The style is great, never used the 4x4. Great for a single person or a couple. I couldn't imagine putting little ones in the rear.... Rumor has it that Toyota may reintroduce as an electric vehicle. I'll definitely like to see that.
