Positive Review
This car is small but has sufficient room to be comfortable on road trips. It was purchased based on the mileage claims of up to 42 mpg on the highway. The claims were off - it averages 41 mpg and has gotten up to 48 mpg while not running the AC and keeping speed below 75 mph. It is easy to park and performs exceedingly well on curvy roads. Given the mileage numbers, acceleration is way better than expected.

Bought my bronze-colored SE 6 speed manual new in June 2020. Made in Japan. Traded in a 2015 Ford Fiesta that was very nice to drive, but very poorly engineered and a mechanical and electrical nightmare. Had an issue with the Toyota at 6,000 miles with battery going completely dead after sitting in garage for 3 days. Found TSB (service bulletin) online, had dealer perform the fix, no more battery issues since. Also had a downstream AFR sensor throw a check engine light on at about 15,000 miles. Dealer installed a new one under warranty, no more issues there either. Stock tires are junk, had to replace all 4 at just under 20,000 miles (tread down to wear bars). Put Continentals on, little firmer ride, but much more confident handling at speed. Honestly, my Fiesta had a better ride/handling balance, but with the new tires, the Corolla is pretty close - more compliant ride, slightly "floatier" in the curves. I blame the 3000 lb curb weight (!). I'm an older guy, I'm used to compact cars weighing closer to 2000 lbs than 3000. But of course, all the safety equipment, rollover standards, and electronics in today's cars add weight. Speaking of safety, the IIHS rates this car as "good' pretty much across the board, with an updated side-impact rating of "acceptable". My biggest complaint - I've had an annoying drivability issue pretty much since day 1. Sometimes when accelerating, I'll get some hesitation or "fish bite" going through the gears. It's only at very light to moderate acceleration: if I hammer it, no hesitation at all. It's worse with the a/c on, and exacerbated when it's hot out. I usually burn regular gas as per the owner's manual recommendation. I have noticed that when I fill up with non-ethanol 91 octane premium, the hesitation nearly goes away and is virtually unnoticeable. I'm curious if anyone else has had this issue. Dealer can't find anything wrong. Interior is definitely tight (I'm 6' 1" and 240 pounds), but once you wiggle inside, it's fairly comfortable. Very little room in the back seats for adults. Not a ton of room in the hatch either, even with the "spare tire delete" package (which I unwittingly got, another minor annoyance). Fit and finish in and out is quite good, though I could do without the shiny black plastic inside that shows fingerprints and dust like crazy. Heat and A/C work excellent. Despite the occasional drivability hiccup, the car is mostly fun to drive with the 6 speed manual. Not a barn-burner, but decent acceleration for what it is. The IMT (automatic rev-matched downshifts) is terrific and one of the best features of the car. Excellent fuel economy for a non-hybrid. I routinely get 30 mpg in spirited city driving without using the A/C. I've gotten well into the 40 mpg range on empty 2 lane roads at a steady 60 to 65 mph. My lifetime average from new after 3 years and 43,000 miles is 30.4 mpg. In summary - this is a stylish, fuel-efficient, comfortable-for-two, practical little car. I do wish I could nail down the hesitation problem, and I just don't feel like this car will go 300,000 miles like some of my older Toyotas did without major issues. Still, if you're in the market for a relative simple smaller car, the Corolla Hatchback deserves your consideration.
Gas mileage, that's all
Too small, uncomfortable, dangerous cars
There's really nothing special about these cars. Too small, road noise is annoying. Hatchback looks weird. Gas mileage is okay, and cheap for upkeep. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend this car. If you get smashed in the back of this car. Good bye!! Terrible rear crash rating on these cars. If you like corolla, buy the sedan size. It's a lot better than these hatchback pile of junker cars.
not fast, kinda quick off the start. Looks nice, the 4 door Is kind of a lie you have backseats but they don't have much room, but overall this car was reliable and never gave me a single worry
Fun to drive, comfortable to drive, JDM.
Rear seats so tight, cargo is not that practical
I love the driving dynamic of this car. It is also very comfortable, good on gas, front seat is really comfortable. Love the suspension tuning, very good handling but also very comfortable. CVT is still not very nice, 1 to 2 gear is not smooth. Rear seats are very small, but if the driver is a girl, then second row is not a problem.
Great gas milage.. Great look and fun to drive.
Extremely low to the ground at 6.7in (pot holes)
I was hesitant to purchase the 2020 Toyota XSE Hatchback as it's such a small car, considering I'm 6'1", but I soon found it's exactly what I wanted and it's perfect for me! It has plenty of leg room and it's comfortable for me, It has a 6sp manual transmission and it gets 36mpg on the hyw ( long drives) with a 13.2gl capacity and 488 miles to empty, I fill up every two weeks at most.. With today's fuel prices it's the best TOYOTA I've ever owned. I've had several CoWorkers asked me to sell it to them and a few people on the street wanting to know more about the car and if it's for sale.. I put some NEW KUMO tires (P225/40R18) and tinted the windows and keep it clean inside and out.
Fun, Stylish, Safe, Practical
Less legroom in backseats, Not many options
I love this car. I got mine in "Galactic Aqua Mica" and it is stunning. The color changes depending on the lighting and is always a pleasure to look at. Its a very stylish car. So many nice curves that make it fun to hand wash. Interior quality is quite surprising for a corolla. Soft touch materials with white stitching accent the dashboard and looks very clean. I only wish they left out the gloss black materials because they just make me OCD about fingerprints everywhere. I decided to get the 6 speed as I've driven 2 manuals before this. The throws are excellent and with the IMT activated, downshifts are a breeze. I only wish that the clutch pedal had a bit of a bite to it. Once you get used to it, however, especially with IMT activated, it makes for very smooth take offs in first. (Should be noted if you live in a city like Chicago you will be shifting ALOT.) The standard features on this SE model are really blowing me away compared to the other cars I've driven. I don't ever need to take my key out of my pocket. I can lock, unlock, and start the car with no key. Auto climate control means I can just set the temperature and never have to worry about getting too hot or cold again. Automatic high beams gives me more peace of mind during night time driving. Radar cruise control will keep a certain distance away from the car in front of you, speed up or slow down depending on how fast the car is going, and assist keeping you in your lane. I feel so safe in this car. Performance is surprising for a Toyota Corolla. I never knew the Corolla to be a fast car but this one has got a little get up and go to it. Its faster then an ND1 Miata and much more comfortable to drive. Of course if you want a faster Corolla, then wait for the GR Corolla to hit the dealers. Infotainment leaves a bit to be desired. Wireless car-play would have been an excellent touch but instead we are stuck with a USB in an awkward spot. I would like to have been able to upgrade the speakers in this car from the factory but its decent enough. Even still the screen is very nice and responsive. (Type C and standard 12v chargers are located in the middle console.) I did a 3 hour drive recently and it did start to get uncomfortable after about 2. So if you take long trips plan more rest stops. I wish the seat was more adjustable but not the worst. I got about 33 mpgs during the trip. All in all this is a great car. My 9 year old said verbatim "I love all of the safety features, I love that the color looks so rare, and I give it a 10/10"
A Blast to Drive
It may get me into trouble
My second new Toyota, I have owned used MR2, Camry, ES300 Lexus and a new Toyota Tundra. I love this little hatchback. Bought the 2022 cvt SE, new. I was very happily surprised, at all the standard features, both safety and function. Radio is better than I expected. The acceleration was a big surprise, the 168hp 2.0 has more than adequate acceleration, bordering on sporty. The suspension has the feel of a much more expensive car. It's sportier than the 4 door model. The look I think comes from the Scion division, as it has a youthful appeal. I like the versatility. Yes the back seat leg room is bad, but I don't ride share and have no real need for it. Economy is great and I have been having fun zipping around town in this little sporty hatchback. I don't understand all the reviews that put down the speed... if you google 0-60 times the 168hp car comes in at around 7.3 - to 7.55 seconds. with a 1/4mi at 15.7 seconds. The new si 0-60 times for 2022 are like 7.1. The corolla hatchback has a pretty respectable time considering that they are not promoting it as a hot hatch, and it is naturally aspirated which is a huge consideration when it comes to the longevity of the drive train. It is a great all around driving car. I did see a used one that had some damage to the soft passenger side dash. It was abraded/scuffed. So it may look nice now but could have problems holding up over time vs the hard plastic older style dash. I bought this car to keep, mine is made in Japan which I was very happy to see on the manuf. plate. My Tundra has lasted 21 years and doesn't owe me a thing. I hope to have this one as long as well.
Fun to drive. Quite interior. Good gas mileage.
Manual seat adjustment. No wireless charging.
Looked at 2022 corolla SE hatch here at a dealer in northern CA. Car is a base model listed at $22,015. Then there is an MSRP price of 23K. Nice sales person at dealer, but with Dealer markup of of almost $3k. Destination charge 1K, tax 2,500. Registration and fees. 1,500. Car is 30K to buy. Not much of a bargain or value buy anymore.
