"Very Well Built"

Subaru built a great vehicle, solid and very well built. The true, symmetrical all wheel drive means It holds the road extremely well, even with all season tires. There really isn't a better vehicle for winter. The boxer engine means it has a very low center of gravity, translating to better driving dynamics. This car has a great suspension, you don't feel much of anything (bumps, potholes, dirt road), and it is very durable. The combination of this great suspension and high ground clearance makes this car a good off-roader. If you get a trailer hitch, this car is good for occasional, light towing. This is an extremely safe vehicle (5 stars almost all the way around). The build quality is some of the best i've ever seen. There are soft-touch materials everywhere, very high quality parts, and attention to engineering. Gas mileage is alright for a car that is heavy and has all wheel drive, I am getting not quite advertised (average 25 winter/30 summer) but it is still good. I have a couple complaints about this car. The engine is not quite adequate, 0-60 is about 11 seconds, which I would almost call unsafe for merging. I really don't care for either of the transmission options (have driven both). The 5-speed manual is poorly ratioed, just doesn't feel right, the clutch is not smooth , it reminds you that the car is underpowered, and you sacrifice some gas mileage. I actually prefer the CVT, even as a manual transmission enthusiast. While there is nothing wrong with the CVT, it is incredibly boring to drive and has some noise. If you want a bigger engine, better manual transmission, more versatility, and more space all for the exact same price, look at Subaru's own Forester, that's why I only give the value a five out of ten, despite the good resale. This car is very versatile and is good in many, many applications, it is extremely solid and well built, Subaru has an incredible reputation. If you want a solid, unique car in a class of its own, this car should be high on your list

"Subaru Crosstrek Fails on Steep, Snowy Terrain"

This fancy new Subaru Crosstrek (with Blizzak snow tires) can't even make it up my snow-packed, but plowed driveway, with maybe 2 inches of new snow. My '05 Outback (with Blizzaks) could crawl up it no problem. Rally up it in 12 inches of new snow. If you live in snow country, do not be fooled by the snazzy new Crosstrek and its 8.7 inches ground clearance. It chokes in the snow when you really need it to rally. The VDC technology apparently applies the brakes and cuts power just when I need it the most to power up my steep, snowy driveway. Yes, there is an "off" switch for this traction and stability control feature, but it didn't seem to make a bit of difference having it turned off or on. This is our 6th Subaru. Never had a problem getting up a snowy road or our own steep driveway before. So utterly disappointed in the new Subaru Crosstrek.

RUGGED AND RELIABLE SMALL SUV

I recently purchased a USED 2015 CROSSTREK and am impressed with the handling , acceleration and comfort. Mine came all the extras with the exception of moon-roof but I really did not need it. The interior is very comfortable and there is plenty of room for 4 adults. Cargo area is a bit limited but it does work for me. The 2015 CROSSTREK looks alot more expensive that it actually is and I love the all wheel drive feature.

Very Dependable - except for headlights

I have a 2017 Crosstrek Premium at 91,000 miles. I maintain it well (new spark plugs, brakes, oil changes, Etc). The only thing that needed replaced was a wheel bearing. My only issue is that the headlights burn out constantly. I've learned to keep a spare in my glovebox. Otherwise I've had zero complaints.

oil OIL oil OIL
Pros

Traction/handling, crash safety

Cons

Engine/oil consumption, lack of power, noise

What I like about the car. Other people driving an Orange Subie wave to you like you are family. Crash safety. I ran my 2014 into a utility pole (I fell asleep) hitting it at 40+ mph and walked away with minor injuries. The car was a goner. Handling on snow, ice, heavy rain, outstanding! I like this so much I want to keep the car despite the many cons I am about to list. What I don't like about the car. I can't believe more owners aren't mentioning the oil issues. If you own a 2013-2015 you are at very high risk of engine failure or serious oil consumption. I bought mine with around 120,000 miles and now have around 160k. I have had to add a quart of oil at about every other fill up since I bought it. I no longer do oil changes, just the filter every 5k. I probably go through 6-8 quarts of oil in that amount of time so what's the point in changing it? That worked for awhile but now I'm resetting emissions malfunctions because all that burnt oil has to go somewhere and it's fouling the Oxygen sensors. Currently I'm looking into a replacement engine. My 2014 had the same issue with almost the same mileage. According to Subaru forums, many of the 2.0 boxer engines had a piston ring issue between 2013 and 2015. Subaru has handled claims voluntarily, sometimes replacing the engine (has to be done at a Subaru dealership), sometimes handing out vouchers for quarts of oil (seriously), and sometimes telling the owner that it is just normal wear and tear. Supposedly claims were only honored if the car was less than ten years old and under 120K. I didn't fully understand the problem I had until it was way too late. The lack of power. After you drive it awhile you really start to understand it's limitations. It will not get up to speed quickly. Do not pull out into traffic thinking you are going to speed up quickly, you won't. Do not pass in a short window, you won't make it. Do not try to quickly cross a road with approaching traffic, you will cause a crash. So on a positive side it does make you a safer more cautious driver once you fully understand this! Wheel studs. I didn't know this was an issue until I read these reviews. I too have a had to replace wheel studs due to the nut stripping out the stud. This was not an easy fix as the nut had to be cut from the stud with the wheel installed. I thought it was something I did but apparently others have had the same problem. The driver seat. There is a bar or edge or something that is extremely uncomfortable to sit on in the bottom of the seat towards the back. I sit in a somewhat unnatural position to avoid putting pressure on this. Did the Subaru engineers not actually sit in one of these seats after the designed it? The stereo. All of the factory speakers were blown at 120k when I bought it and sound usually only works on the passenger side. The stereo deck looks like it came out of a 2003, not a 2013. If I do replace the engine I will also be upgrading the stereo. The air conditioning. I have owned two of these XV Crosstreks and neither one could keep the very small interior cool on a hot sunny day (which is anything above 80 in Minnesota). The AC compressor had to be replaced on the first one I owned which was almost a $1,000 job. Noise. I am running on all new wheel bearings and it's still noisy as hell. I thought maybe it was the tires (which had a good noise rating) but according to other reviews, it's another symptom. It's really hard to hear my four year old from the back seat. I want to like this car but when I read more of the reviews I see that it has definitely got some problems. It seems like after those first three years of production they worked out some of the kinks and the 2016s and newer are much better cars. Now I have to decide if I trade up or fix up.

Great Car!
Pros

Responsive. Feels safe in bad weather.

Cons

Cargo area a bit small.

Super responsive and fun to drive. I love everything about this car. Sometimes wish it had more cargo room, but that probably keeps the mileage good.

Good not great

Pros: ease of driving. Reliably. Great trunk. Cons: key gets stuck when trying to pull out of ignition (googled it, very common problem). 2nd row doesn’t have enough room for infant car seat. Loud ride. You can see the pixels on the touch screen monitor. It’s a great car for a young driver.

A little "squirelly" on icy roads
Pros

Good gas mileage, amazing amt of interior room!!

Cons

Need to add sand bags in back for traction

For the most part I love my Crosstrek...however, of all the many subaru's I've owned up here in Alaska, this model is, by far, the "squirell-est"....I find I have to put sand bags in the back for extra traction and even then the back end seems to 'drift' over 50 mph on the roads. I always keep good tires on my vehicles and even change them out from summer to winter, but even then the back end of my Crosstrek doesn't seem to hold-to-the-road. Even my husband, a mechanic, agrees with me!!! Other than that I really like my 'little subby'!!! I just have to drive slower, much slower, in the winter months.
