"Best car I ever had"

I started buying Subarus in the summer of 2014, I needed a reliable vehicle for my wife, so, I decided to buy her an Outback, she was so satisfied with the handling of the vehicle, that I traded my 2012 TDI jetta for a 2015 Forester, but always staring at a WRX. The Outback was great, best snow vehicle I ever had, but at 47 years old, I wanted to feel some adrenaline. I do not know how, but I convinced my wife to trade my 2015 Forester for a 2016 black WRX STI. When I bought it, I felt great in the passenger seat, extremely comfortable and the engine rumble, made me feel powerful. I know I should not say that, but one time I engaged in a race with a 370Z Nissan, we were side to side at a 120 MPH, but the car kept asking for more, like telling me, is that all you have?. This is my daily commute car, it catches attention from people, especially young guys and Police patrols. This is a guys car, normally Women are not attracted by it, this is one of the reasons my wife allowed my to buy it. Overall, stiff suspension, good in cornering, good acceleration response, excellent handling, bad on gas(who cares), beautiful design, proven engine, good in dirt and ashfalt. Buy it, you wont regret it.

Critical Review

"Econobox with a great AWD system"

1. The good news is that Subaru has a great AWD system. 2. The bad news is that Subaru removed roughly 1" of ground clearance from the 2014 model. 4.9" ground clearance in a car like this is just not enough. I scrape EVERYWHERE! I've had cars even lower than 4.9" before but I guess the wheels were closer to the corners or something because I have never had issues scraping like I do with the Subaru. 3. The base radio is atrocious and the speakers are laughable. Replacing the "Starlink" system is an enormous pain in the butt. 4. The paint is horribly soft, even by Subaru standards. I have blue paint and basically looking at the car gives it swirls. 5. Ride quality is not great (very bouncy). Probably due to the wheels being so far from the corners. On the upside, the turning radius is tiny. 6. The throttle mapping is very aggressive. 100% throttle at less than 30% pedal makes it really hard to drive in traffic or slowly through a neighborhood.

The Rex
Pros

Fast acceleration, fun to drive, flashy, easy to customize

Cons

stiff, not family friendly, not good for long trips, bad on gas

I thoroughly enjoyed driving my WRX. The handling was terrific, the acceleration was fun, and it was flashy enough to get attention. With the WRX its all about Smiles per Gallon, and definitely not about Miles per Gallon. You will not save any gas with this car. You will not save on gas with this car. You have to understand that this little boxer 4 isn't your typical 4 banger. If you find one for sale, and its been a dream to own one...do it. Always do it.

6 year and over 100,000 miles of ownership
Pros

fun daily

Cons

gas mileage could be better

Purchased this car band new and have nothing but smiles driving it. I have considered trading it in after 6 years, but every time I think about I ask myself why I would. Its been reliable despite changing the compressor at around 95k miles since it broke and did not have any air conditioner. Despite that, just regular maintenance. Also, this vehicle has not let me down at all; whether I am driving on the highway for hours or cruising around in the city, reliability has been top notch. Now add in snow tired and all whel drive, this car has been so confident inspiring and safe. I have also tuned this car and have taken it on the track a few times and never failed me. My friends joked when I first tuned this car at 20k miles that it wont last and I can tell you, this engine has lasted me. Mind you, I do take care of it. Oil changes, brakes, spark plugs, etc, I have been regular on those. I don't buy cheap products either-used Grimspeed products for aftermarket, a reputable tuner/dealer and mostly take it to Subaru for all other services. I am considering pushing to 200k miles before I change the car. I have one toddler and one newborn on the way, I hope this car will still fit my needs for my family. If it doesnt, most likely keep it and use an SUV as a family car and keep this for my weekend fun/track days

If you like the looks...dont hesitate.

This car is great and I plan on driving it until it wont let me. I am a WRX slappy going all the way back to my 2002. I drove it for all 240k and it still had the original clutch and turbo when I sold it. I'm 53 yrs old and can say WRX's are the best cars i have ever owned. If in a winter area I recommend snow tires. Pro's: Fun, Reliable, 30+MPG Highway; Roomy for a small car; just looks cool; Holds Value. Cons: Steering Wheel Volume button is touchy and can easily skip to the next chapter or song; Air Conditioning seems to struggle when over 95.

This car has saved my life twice

Once in the winter and once when someone ran a red light. It’s almost like the car listens to your brain. The steering is quick and turn radius is ridiculous. I love this car.

Favorite car I’ve ever owned
Pros

Quick car that can handle the snow, best sounding.

Cons

Stereo in base model, expensive to fix.

I have a 2020 WRX STI and I LOVE IT! The only issues I have is I wish they would have made it a little faster from the factor or able to handle more power with a stock engine for aftermarket modding. There is a HUGE modding community that really turns up the power o these cars. On the stock block (Type RA) you can safely get 400whp. Anything higher than that you will need a forged Aluminum block. Also next issue is if you don’t have the next model up from base with Harmon and Kardon speakers you are going to most definitely want a new stereo. It’s like a dollar store stereo in the base model and that’s another $1500 investment for a good one with a new head unit because the stock one sucks. Anyways If you want power and the ability to drive year round with no issues then the WRX STI is going to be IT. Also now other tuner car sounds like the flat four with unequal length headers! It’s amazing once you get an exhaust put on!!

'17 Subaru WRX - 280+ horses
Pros

Sporty, Aggressive and Timeless look; Power

Cons

MPG, Maintenance Costs

PROS: It's fun to drive - the power (with aftermarket), those sounds, the acceleration, every thing you want inside an AWD, sport sedan vehicle. I like the VA's interior (cabin) and exterior (aggressive look), something premium. Its 0-60mph. CONS: MPG, Maintenance

Best car I’ve owned

Handles great, super fun to drive. The awd makes steep hills and bends in the road a breeze. Super customizable for aftermarket beginners. (Do research) and have fun!
