Positive Review
I purchased this car second hand 10 years ago for about $6,000. Since then I've put on over 100k miles and had relatively minor issues. The H6 engine is an absolute tank. I've maybe put another $4k into this care over the past decade, and honestly it still drives like it's a new car. The only downside is the rust starting to develop on the rear quarter panel. Other than that, this car has been fantastic and I have essentially zero complaints. As I approach 200k total miles I wonder how much longer i have until it looks and feels like an "old car"
Critical Review
"I bought this vehicle with New England winters in mind (AWD for snow). It really does handle beautifully in poor driving conditions... However when the check engine light is on or you can smell antifreeze fumes it becomes a night mare. Initially, everything was great, bought it used with 80,000, I had some reservations but the Suburu dealer assured me they will back the car 100% and talked me into a used car warranty... so the slow downward spiral began. Over the past 3 years ending with the dreaded head gasket, one troublesome piston, timing chain and oil pump replacement at a cost of $4900. Apparently, Subaru knew of these problem but refused a recall of the 2003 and earlier models. The car sounds like the front windows are always open a tiny bit. Replacement of rubber gaskets at a cost of $395! No more Subaru!!!

I bought a used 2004 for my mom thinking it would last her for a while, especially since it only had 80k miles. Boy, were we wrong. Totally rusted out bottom meant that the entire brake line needed replacement, but there are no more parts made for this anymore. Mechanic had to really troubleshoot this issue and fabricate a new line. Why in the world did Subaru make metal brake lines that could rust?? Especially when nearly all Subaru owners are in snowy, cold climates? Dumb. The second issue was when the timing belt broke, mom was driving around 20 mph or less, and it breaks the valves. Cost to repair is more than the car is worth. Car is going to junk parting-out heaven now. Who ever heard of such a design? Poor thought put into designing this model.
Bought new twenty and 235000 miles ago. Best darn car weve owned. All weather no problems and safe and secure. So we bought a new 2019 Crosstrek .
We have had this car for 11 years, bought it used for $10K in 2011. It has been very reliable, only replaced some exhaust components, normal brake pad and rotor replacements. Living in rural upstate NY this car was a must. We run 4 snows on it and it is unstoppable in the snow, very sure feel. Body has held up great, only small surface rust behind rear wheel. This replaced a 1996 Subaru Legacy wagon, which we used in the family with 3 of us driving it until 2022! I am a believer!!
I love Subarus! This is my second Subaru. I really like the SUV style of my outback. Fun to drive everywhere!
Reliable, lots of room inside, dual sunroofs
wind at high speeds is unsettling
Drove off the lot in 2016. The Subaru had 202K miles on it. Since 2016, I have had to put new brakes on it all around twice, replace the radiator, replace radiator hoses, replace the battery several times, replace the alternator, replace rear brake lights, and refill the ac juice. This has been the best car ever. Very reliable. The interior is in need of a total make over. The seats are breaking in the leather, The front moon roof cover fell off, the carpet is filthy and stained, The door panels are shredding, the heated seats work but don't. The cruise control stopped working for some reason. I backed into a cement block and had to replace muffler. It isn't the original model but the one I got works great but it sounds like a dragster from outside the car. This baby rides like a heavy jet airplane on the freeway. Wind will cause the vehicle to be hard to control. You're doing 80mph on the freeway and feel like you're all over the road. The car has the worst blind spot problem. I can't trust the two outside rear-view mirrors and the inside middle one. I literally have to look over both shoulders and I still can't see perfectly. The check engine light was coming on and wasn't passing emissions at first. If you take the Subaru to any auto parts store and ask them for their computer. Plug it in, reset the codes, go drive your Subaru about 50-100 miles and then immediately go to emissions station and retest before that light comes back on. I passed and the check engine light never came back on. The engine light popped on for an emission valve problem. But it's no longer a problem. It runs excellent in snow with all season tires. It is safe and reliable. Gas costs 40.00 to fill up tank and it gets around 280-320 miles per tank.
Dependable if maintained well.
Boaty stock suspension, get coils, trust me
Refuses to die. Had it for 10 years going strong. 4EAT is bulletproof Sizable, but niche aftermarket
The wagon can carry a lot of gear
Bad transmission
This is my 2nd Subaru and my 2nd subaru that needed the transmission replaced. I will probably not buy a Subaru again because of this.
workhorse
wind noisy; burns headlights; blows gaskets
It is a known fact that these cars regularly blows three things: - head gasket: it sure did with me - headlamps: oh boy, these are terrible: I go about 3 or 4 bulbs every year.. thanks amazon and ebay for cheap replacements - your patience: you get constantly fed up with the dang computer complaining with P420 code which usually means a new cat converter... but if you are lucky, just an O2 sensor... I went through both.... Seats are hard and uncomfortable for long trips; for short trips, you cope with... And the wind noise from the windows, is quite annoying. Still, a workhorse.
