What Owners are Saying About the 1992 Subaru Loyale
"Reliable Car!"
"I recieved this car from my great aunt a few years ago. she bought it new, 19 years ago! To this day, it starts to the turn of the key, every single time. The seats held up beautifully, with no tears or rips, and there isn't a drop of rust on the whole vehicle! Overall, a well-built, low cost maintenance, reliable vehicle!"
"Little car that could"
"I learned to drive on this car -- had 190K on it when we finally let it go. Had a lot of quirks; everything electronic went to pieces (had to hit at least 50 mph to get one of the power windows to go up) but yet it was like the energizer bunny. I heard it's the weakest of all Subaru models, so I'd happily take any others they make! Great gas mileage (about 30 mpg anywhere), great visibilty, basic design but really good & comfortable, moved with it; amazing what I could haul!. GREAT beginner car!"
"So god, yet so bad... yet so good."
"If you are thinkig about buying this car, know what it is and what it is not. It is a fairly reliable, very economical car. It is zippy, if a little underpowered for highway driving with passegers, and it will take you anywhere you want to go. It is very simple - these were designed to be modular, so replacing, repairing, or upgrading thingsyourself is 'relatively' easy. BUT It is not a headache-free vehicle - little things go wrong frequently. It is not very comfortable inside. It is not the lowest-maintenance vehicle you will ever find. What you are paying for with a subaru is the mechanical simplicity, gas mileage, and legendary snow stability and dis-engageable 4WD. And you *will* pay - you will notice that, whereas most used cars sell for 70-80% of their bluebook on the private market, subaru loyales, GLs, and GL-10s go for 90-110% of it almost without fail. I have taken my subaru over mountain passes in snowstorms. I drove fourteen hours roundtrip into the Wallowa mountains, on wet clay (super slick) roadsincluding 20" deep stream-ditches running across the road, that local residents SWORE required a lifted pickup with mudwheels - the road was so bad I actually came upon a fatal accident caused by the terrible conditions. I have done all this with a stock version - no fancy tires, lift kit, or anything. I have also slept (semi)comfortably with my grilfriend in the back. BUT It has absolutely the noisiest engine of any car or truck I've ever owned. Not just on mine, but on every subaru ive ever ridden in, the valves are always clattering like a deisel, the check engine light is always on, the air conditioner never works, the power windows always are super-slow (sometimes need a PUSH!), and something is always ticking, tapping, knocking or slapping in the engine. The CV joints tend to need replacement at least once a year (3-500$$). They also tend to have been owned by generations of snowboarders who didnt know what 'oil-change' meant. They also are very prone to overheating and blowing headgaskets. This car is great, but it makes me very paranoid - it is fairly reliable, but it SOUNDS and FEELS like something could give at any time. Definitely a good car, but definitely one you should know about before you buy."
