Positive Review
Just drove off the lot last night with a new smart fortwo passion model. It has room for me (6'4") and my partner (6'2") to ride in comfort. The car handles very well, stable at speed. The transmission simply requires a few moments to get used to. Just let up on the gas at the moment of shifting (like you would with a manual) and smooth shifts are possible. Likewise, with the paddle shifters, quite seamless shifts can be accomplished. Good stereo, and incredible heat! Once it gets warmed up, you have to turn it down or you will roast. Last night was about 2 degrees above zero, and we turned the heat down to about 65 degrees on a selector that went from around 60 - 80 degrees, and were very comfortable. Looking forward to a road trip soon. Did not feel intimidated on the road next to semis or large SUVs. Plenty of power for interstate driving, just use the right gear for the situation. A fun car. Folks at work can't stop talking about it. I recommend to any who have an open mind to consider this car. It isn't for everyone, but neither is an SUV or sports car/convertible. Cheers!
Critical Review
I purchased my Smart Fortwo Cabrio last Fall from the original owner - black with a silver Tridion. On the plus side, this car is very economical and (yes) fun to drive. It gets looks everywhere I go. It has a lot of features for car of this price and size. On a recent drive from Minneapolis to Atlanta area (1150 miles), the Smart did surprisingly well on the interstate (much to the chagrin of the myriad truckers) and got about 40 mpg. Even with the high miles (143400), it did not use a drop of oil. The convertible top is cool! On the minus side, it has had its issues. The clutch actuator failed to the tune of $1,300. Two TPMS sensors failed at a cost of $300. The purge valve tripped a check engine light and cost $100 to repair. Switchgear feels cheap. Stereo is finicky (cd changer). The dark interior is drab and every nit of lint shows. I have learned to live with the 'unique' manumatic transmission - my trick is to treat it as if it were a manual, letting off of the gas in-between shifts. I can approach the smoothness of a proper automatic by doing this. Otherwise, the shifting is rough, jerky-jerky and tempermental. I do think it's funny how Smart "recommends" a European spec oil for the engine, seeing how it's a Mitsubishi! Finally, the 10,000 mi maintenance interval is a joke. My Smart has been maintained with premium oil and filters every 5k since new, and it shows! If you buy a Smart, don't plan on staying 'under the radar'. Even though they've been here since 2008, I get stopped regularly by folks who have never seen one. My Smart also attracts every aggressive idiot driver on the highway, who thinks it is a sport to tailgate and then pass, even though I am going +10.

Fun and easy to drive -all the amenities. Heated seats a/c. Nice blue tooth stereo-great cargo hatch
Small footprint affordable unique and fits a guy that is 6 ft 4
Definitely improved shifting would have helped but you get used to it
I've purchased the Smart car and 2008 against everybody that I know and their wishes they advised me how unsafe they were they advised me on how expensive they were they also said things like where's the other half of the car the list goes on and on just foolishness I did all of my homework and all of my research and they are one of the safest little cars on the road they were quality for the most part they have issues but so do other cars I finally had to spend $6,450 on repairs this year but considering it is an 08 and this is 2025 that's not too bad the only other repairs I've done over all of those years is general maintenance nothing major I love the car it's really unfortunate that our society tells us that bigger is better and that we need to eat more gas in order to be bigger better and stronger I don't agree I think we can do a lot better and I think smart was on the right path it's unfortunately that they've canceled it. One thing I will say is that shame on Mercedes for treating me like second class citizen when I came in with a smart car and not driving one of their Mercedes-Benz it's unfortunate I think they should have had their own separate dealership and tell Mercedes where to go I will never buy another Mercedes again I will always buy smart unfortunately I can't do either one now I will continue to keep my car and maybe one day they'll bury me in it I love it that much I will not part with my little girl ever my second car I own is very unique as well it's a 1951 meteor made exclusively in Canada I love it so much
This car is not fast, this car rides rough, the interior noise is pretty loud……but man let me tell you!! I have never had so much fun driving a car! This thing hugs the corners, driving at 80 mph in a 38 mile commute each way i average 38MPG…..the paddle shifters are a blast, I have had mustangs, firebirds, turbo Saabs, and this car takes the cake! I suggest to get one! And the aftermarket parts for it are readily available and reasonably priced!
Fun
Small
I've had no trouble with it. It's fun to drive. I feel safe in it. Gas mileage is excellent maintenance was easy to find.
I've seen some odd reviews not so good, to me, they obviously never actually owned one. I've owned a 2012 for 3 years, bought it used obviously, the gas mileage is scary good. The AC and heat are better than anything I've owned before. Plenty of power for such a small car, the room in the car is nothing like I expected, I have to pull the seat up to drive, a very large man can drive with no problem, when you open the door its like you have opened up the side of the car, easy to get in and out of and the hatchback and drop down tailgate do great, not a lot of room in the back but plenty to go grocery shopping or taking a child to school. I drives slightly different than a regular car but you can zip in and out of places and turn on a dime like nobody's business. We own a couple of Hummers and my wife has a super charged Camaro from hell, a mustang and H3, so we do cars. If you are in the market and it's in good shape don't hesitate, I've had not one!! problem out of this little guy other than the clear coat on the front piece peeled. But it you will not regret, besides it's a Mercedes product, so can't be too shaby and love the glass top roof!
It won't die.
Everything else
The ride is unbearable, mine has about 30 mpg and it takes premium. So any savings you would get from a decent mpg rating are eaten up by that factor. It struggles to reach 55 mph, especially if it isn't flat terrain and good luck operating at low speeds without lurching forward or going up a hill. It is the worst car I have ever driven but the one good thing I can say is that it won't die (unfortunately).
Cute head-turner, great mileage, many more
Hard to handle in crosswinds at high speed
I have a 2009 Smart Fortwo. Original owner. Smart totally debunks many of the lies about small cars that the gas hoggers spread to defend their egos and their anti-environmental choices. (I give a break to people who use trucks for real work, not people who show off their expensive cars/trucks and tear up land and disturb people and animals by four-wheeling.) Claustrophobic interior: I'm 6' 2", have had 4 cars before (2 subcompact and 2 small sedans). Headroom is drastically better than Buick Skylark, Mazda GLC, Mazda 323, and Toyota Corolla. Legroom is at least equal if not better. The width is a problem for two wide people. You may be bumping elbows. No cargo space: From the outside it may look like there is no space behind the seats, but there is. Obviously, you give up a trunk/cargo space. You're not going to haul lumber in it. For a city car, the cargo space is adequate. Four full paper bags of groceries fit fine, or two banker's boxes. Death trap: I can't cite stats (don't know them), but when I switched from Toyota Corolla to Smart, my insurance rates stayed the same, except collision insurance went up because car was more valuable. Insurance companies follow such things in order to stay in business. No acceleration: This Smart won't snap your head back, but it does fine for city driving. Later models had supercharged engine with standard manual transmission. Those were a blast to drive, had very nice acceleration. Can't drive on a highway: I have occasionally driven at 75 mph on interstates. As I recall, I had to use the truck lane on a long, unusually steep hill. (I live in the foothills of the Rockies. You don't get hills like that in Illinois.) Uncomfortable ride: Small sedans (and Mazda minivan and Honda CRX) are smoother. Smart's genes are Mercedes, not Toyota. If this suspension were on a Mercedes that snapped your head back, it would be called sporty. Since the Smart won't snap your head back, it's called rough. Go figure. Poor handling: Driving in a parking lot with light fresh snow, I tried to get it to skid, both on tight turns and braking. I couldn't. Admittedly my speed was limited. A fast car might have accelerated enough to get to a speed where it would skid. On the other hand, the tiny turning radius puts more sideways force on the car. Unreliable: In 55K miles and over 10 years, the only mechanical failure I've had is one headlight went out. The Smart has all the benefits of a small car that I'm aware of. 39 mpg with A/C on, 41 without. Fabulous for U-turns. (Probably the smallest turning radius ever available in the U.S.) Easy to park. Many more I'm forgetting, I'm sure.
I am pleased with the ruggedness of this car. It is so cute and so small I did not expect its innate durability.
