Part of your car’s emission system, the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) Valve is a small, one-way valve that’s used to control excess hydrocarbons present under normal operation within the crankcase. During the regular 4-cycle process, some fuel charge is forced passed the piston rings during the combustion process entering the crankcase. Over time, the PCV valve can clog. The warning signs of a failed or failing PCV Valve are blue smoke from the exhaust pipe, rough idle, excessive oil consumption measured by the oil dipstick, tough starting, poor fuel economy and, of course, your check engine light coming on. Unfortunately, these signs can signal many types of problems with your car. If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s best to take your car to a trusted mechanic who can diagnose the exact nature of your problem.
