Positive Review
I've owned my XB from new. I have traveled over 300,000 miles to date (3/21) I maintain all my cars and this car has only needed wear items. The motor has never been apart for repair. Any parts needed are inexpensive and readily available. This car has rewarded my years of ownership with 30 plus mpg and thumbs up from young and old everywhere I travel.

Perfect commuter car
go go little putt putt! You can make this hill.
This thing has been through 8 partners with me. I bought this car used, it had been in three accidents. It's been in a few more since then. It's unkillable! I have to replace the battery every couple years and there are some mild electrical issues, it left me stranded once. The AC doesn't work, the windows don't really work, the actuators in the doors don't really work either. I don't care. We're taking this baby another 150,000 XXX Team little white toaster forever x Pro tip: take the backseats out and you have a huge SUV for transporting anything. I've moved couches in this thing.

Last forever, packs like Tetris, very reliable
A little slow to get moving on interstates
I bought this in 2010. She was used, but I’d loved her at first sight. It has taken me through rough desert terrain, up the Rocky Mountains, through miles of interstates and hills and rain and snow. I have never ever had an issue with this car other than issues due to old age and regular maintenance. No transmission, air conditioner, fuel pump, radiator, etc problem issues. The most costly part was a hub bearing replacement because I had spent 13 years riding through all sorts of terrain and it was just worn down. I will drive this thing til it’s so old and rusted that she just can’t go anymore. That car was there when I was homeless, when I cried during my divorce, when I needed a safe space to scream when my mother died. She has seen me fall in and out of love so many times. She’s helped me pack a ridiculous amount of boxes to move to a new home at least 8 times when a relationship ended or when I lost a job. She provides heat when I’m cold and covered in snow and provides cold air in the humid southern heat. She’s seen lush forests, forever valleys, vibrant canyons, wildfires, thundersnow and glowing hillsides. She’s played music for me when I have dealt with the darkest of depressions and in my happiest of gleeful moments. She’s covered in hairs from so many pets over the years hiding in cracks I can’t reach. She’s been hit multiple times by other drivers, but has always kept rolling and kept me safe. She’s been so amazing to me and I’ll never buy anything other than a Toyota/Scion ever again. So if you need a car for your kid or are looking at a newer model, get ready to have one of the best cars you buy. You won’t regret it (even if she’s a little slow).
versatility, interior space relative to small out
perhaps not the most comfortable
Economical, reliable and stylish. Ok well I guess stylish is a matter of opinion. We bought this car when it was two years old with 42,000 miles on it. It had clearly had a hard life in its first few years with so many miles, several windshield rock stars and cracks, and a badly scraped rear bumper. The dealer fixed the cosmetic problems before sale. The next 75,000 miles it was a family regional car that actually took one long road trip to CA with the whole family, cruising on 80mph CA freeways with no problems. Gas mileage was high 20s to 30, city and hwy (boxy shape results in little difference hwy or city). With the manual transmission it is geared very low and as a result surprises you in the acceleration category at lower speeds. The transverse placement of the engine makes it huge on the inside for its very small outside dimensions, although DIY repairs in the engine compartment are challenging as a result. Luckily not much repair. Up to 145K miles not one single repair was required, just regular maintenance. Timing chain, so no timing belt replacement - ever. For the last 10-15K miles it has been the car for two college students 300 miles from home. Despite my best urging, its hasn't received the best care in this period, and it also has been involved in a few fender benders (my daughter kept trying to make its outside dimensions even smaller!). Nevertheless, today at 155K miles it has needed three repairs, water pump, alternator, and an airbag sensor replacements. These are all things that would have needed replacement far sooner on a lesser car. I have never owned a better car in 50 years of car ownership, and it so totally outshines the few Subies I have had the mis-fortune of owning. But I wont go there.
fun, fun ... :-)
... impending sparsity :-(
... my partner through years of adventures w. amazing functional capacities as "urban pick-up", tremendous for moving people & materials. I am most fond of the unfettered "original" version, a truly vintage classic ... one was proudly listed @ 298.702 miles for $ 4500 ... quite a bargain :-)
I value reliability more than speed and style
A little higher gas mileage
I brought the car new in 2004 - it is now almost 18 yrs old...never kept any car this long. It is a very good car...most expenses are just normal wear and tear... over the yrs had to replace wheel bearings and an exhaust system and a clutch at 150,000 miles, but not bad for the time used. I don't know what Toyota was thinking when they made the rear hatch handle with plastic anchors- I taped it on a awhile, but after awhile the dealer repaired it for free. I wish Toyota would bring back the 2004-2006 xB , only this time with 3" more width, 4" more cargo length, a larger 1.8 - 2 litre engine, a six speed transmission and a more conventional looking front end - perfect!
great mpg, easy to work on, low repairs, reliable
louder road noise, more of a bumpy ride
I loved this car and have had it for 11 years. It has been so reliable and just keeps going and going. So easy to get in and out of. Great visibility. Super head room. (my fiancée is 6' 7'') Spacious for hauling stuff. Zippy enough for a 4 cylinder. Unbelievable mileage (33-38mpg)
