Capable of hard work, the 2024 Ram ProMaster is a versatile full-size van offering multiple configurations to fulfill a variety of needs. Pricing starts at $59,180.
With its Super High roof option, the 2024 Ram ProMaster secures the top spot in its segment for cargo volume, which is key in a full-size van engineered for commercial service. It’s also a leader in payload capacity. Despite its work ethic, the ProMaster also excels in advanced safety features, as well as its Uconnect 5 infotainment system with its available 10.1-inch touchscreen. Another feature setting it apart from segment rivals is its front-wheel drive. Every other competitor (the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, GMC Savana, and Chevy Express) are rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of full-size vans, including the Ram ProMaster.
Although the current generation Ram ProMaster has been around since the 2015 model year, the enhancements are few and far between. Ram gave it (what in this segment is) a major makeover last year; consequently, the changes this year are few. Ram did drop the Crew Van from the 2024 configuration lineup. On the plus side: A heated windshield and steering wheel are now available as options. Ram also offers its ParkSense rear-park assist with automatic stop for 2024. Coming soon is a fully electric ProMaster. Ram promises to introduce the battery electric iteration before the end of 2023.
The 2024 Ram ProMaster Window Van has a starting sticker price of $59,180, with the range-topping ProMaster Window Van 3500 SLT+ High Roof Extended kicking off at $63,115. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $3,847 to $4,103 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.
MSRP | KBB Fair Purchase Price (national avg.) | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
$59,180 | $55,333 | |||
$63,115 | $59,012 |
For all the above reasons, comparing prices within the full-size van segment is an exercise in futility. However, because it’s what we do, we can tell you that when comparing apples to apples, getting into the Ford Transit Cargo Van or the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter costs more. If you are searching for a bargain in a work van, we suggest the older, more basic GMC Savana and Chevy Express with lower starting prices.
Before buying the Ram ProMaster, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. To date, the Ram ProMaster leads the full-size segment for retaining value down the road. The numbers are relatively close; however, the ProMaster is the clear leader.
Ram offers only one engine for the ProMaster. It’s a standard V6 delivering more-than-adequate grunt with 276 horsepower, which is about average for the segment. It’s not exactly a speed demon, but it has enough power to get the job done. It’s linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission, delivering smooth shifts without fuss.
Though it’s a big van, the Ram ProMaster doesn’t feel all that cumbersome from behind the wheel. We think the ride comfort and maneuverability are much better than the more old-fashioned, truck-based, body-on-frame work vans of the past. We’re looking at you, GMC Savana and Chevy Express. A work van at its core, the ProMaster is comfortable on the highway and more agile around city streets than you might expect. This is thanks to its best-in-class turning radius. We find it stable and easy to drive, partially because of the standard cross-wind assist feature. Its standard front-wheel-drive layout differentiates the ProMaster from everything else in this segment. All its competitors use the rear or all the wheels for propulsion. We’d like to see Ram add all-wheel drive as an option, but putting the power to the front wheels still gives it an advantage over rear-wheel drive when you need traction in snow, gravel, or mud.
The government doesn’t estimate fuel economy in this class of vans. Needless to say, the numbers aren’t sparkling, but when it comes to a work van, you need what you need. Fuel economy is a secondary consideration.
Practicality is the name of the game inside the Ram ProMaster. The sheer volume of this van is impressive, partially because of the front-wheel-drive configuration. A driveshaft and a rear differential take up some cargo space in a rear-wheel-drive van. In fact, the ProMaster is a class leader in cargo volume. With none of that hardware in the way, the cargo hold of the ProMaster is very space-efficient, and it’s easy to load and unload thanks to a low-load floor. Like any work van, customization is almost limitless. Whether you need a plumbing package, an HVAC package, or just about anything else you can think of, the ProMaster has you covered. Talk to your local dealer about the specific requirements of your business to get the appropriate setup.
We find the front seats are supportive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is about what you’d expect for a work van on the low end of the price range. If you want a work van that flirts with luxury, take a look at the upper trims of the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. One thing that’s a little odd about the ProMaster is that the Window Van configuration does not add more seats as standard equipment. If you want a true passenger van, you must add the extra seats as an upfit. If your van needs to include multiple seats, we recommend the Transit or Sprinter.
There are three basic configurations of the ProMaster: cargo van, window van, and cutaway. The cargo van and window van are self-explanatory. The cutaway model has a customizable ladder frame behind the cab with the back of the cab open. The cutaway is suitable for an upfit that you can walk into from the driver’s seat. By the way, the cutaway is a popular foundation for recreational vehicles. The cargo van is available in three wheelbases, four cargo lengths, and three roof heights. The window van is only available in the longest wheelbase with the high roof, and you have the pick of a 12- or 13-foot cargo length. The cutaway is available in two wheelbases and three cargo lengths. All of this versatility is pretty common among full-size vans.
Class-leading cargo volume
With its Super High roof option, the Ram ProMaster is the class leader in cargo volume with an impressive figure of 520 cubic feet and 86 inches of cargo height.
Capable V6
The Pentastar V6 engine powering the ProMaster boasts a maximum towing capacity of 6,910 pounds and a class-leading 4,680-pound payload capacity.
Front-wheel drive
The class-exclusive front-wheel-drive setup provides this van with solid all-weather traction and a huge cargo area with a low, flat load floor.
Uconnect infotainment systems
A user-friendly Uconnect 7-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay comes standard in the ProMaster. It’s upgradeable to a 10.1-inch touchscreen unit with navigation.
Driver assistance technology
The ProMaster is fairly generous with advanced safety tech features. Standard are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, crosswind assist, driver-attention alert, and traffic-sign recognition. Among the options are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, and a surround-view camera.
Roll-up cargo door
An available roll-up cargo door is optional for the ProMaster if you prefer it over the traditional hinged cargo doors.
Under the hood of every 2024 Ram ProMaster lies a 3.6-liter V6 linked to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The ProMaster is the only van in its class with front-wheel drive; consequently it has a vast, space-efficient cargo area with a low, flat load floor. The ProMaster can tow up to 6,910 pounds and has a best-in-class maximum payload rating of 4,680 pounds.
Most vans in this class have more variety under the hood. For example, the Ford Transit has an available turbocharged V6, the Sprinter has two diesel choices, and the Chevy Express and GMC Savana have an optional V8.
The Ram ProMaster is backed by a bumper-to-bumper limited warranty for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. A 5-year/60,000-mile warranty covers the powertrain. This is typical coverage in this segment. Additionally, you get 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance service.
As is true within this class of full-size vans, neither the government through its NHTSA agency or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have safety or crash tested the ProMaster.
