2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Preview

He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. And he spent several years as a staff writer at BBC Top Gear magazine. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is a highly capable full-size truck with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Nothing else is quite like it.

All-electric pickups are gaining in popularity, but truck buyers are a practical bunch and many of them would like the backup of a gasoline engine. Ram has the answer with the Ramcharger. It’s a powerful truck with two electric motors that can cover a lot of ground on battery power alone. But there’s also a V6 on board to help it go an even greater distance. And it will get the job done with impressive towing and hauling abilities. The conventional Ram 1500 lineup of full-size trucks is reviewed separately. The all-electric Ram REV pickup also has its own review.

What's New for 2025

Ram has updated the whole 1500 truck lineup for 2025, with new looks and new equipment, a luxurious Tungsten trim, plus an all-electric version and this plug-in hybrid model. These two latter variants are built on a different platform than the rest of the range. They still use traditional body-on-frame construction, but it’s lighter. The Ramcharger’s muscle enables class-leading towing and payload figures.

Ram 1500 Ramcharger Pricing

We expect the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger to start at around $60,000. That would be for a basic Tradesman version. The entire Ram 1500 truck lineup gains a new super-luxurious Tungsten trim for 2025, and the Ramcharger plug-in hybrid drivetrain is available in that model.

Ramcharger Tradesman $60,000 (estimate)
Ramcharger Big Horn $65,000 (estimate)
Ramcharger Limited $75,000 (estimate)
Ramcharger Tungsten $95,000 (estimate)

These estimates are for manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and do not include any factory-to-dealer delivery fees (destination charges).

On-Sale Date

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is set to arrive at dealerships toward the end of 2024.

Right now, there aren’t any other pickups that are plug-in hybrids. However, the Ford F-150 offers a regular hybrid drivetrain on its options list. Add all-wheel drive to make it comparable to the Ramcharger, and we’re looking at around $65K to start. The Toyota Tundra offers its iForce Max hybrid setup in Platinum trim (nothing lower). With all-wheel drive as well, that would add up to about $70.5K. For anyone thinking of going completely electric, the F-150 Lightning begins in the low 50s, and the Ram 1500 REV is expected to come in at about $58K. Before buying a new Ramcharger truck, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should be paying.

Power, Ride, and Handling

There’s a stampede of 663 horsepower under the Ramcharger’s hood, created by a gasoline V6 and a pair of electric motors. All-wheel drive is standard. That’s accompanied by a muscular 615 lb-ft of torque. To compare, the hybrid setup available in the Ford F-150 makes 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. And the iForce Max hybrid drivetrain offered in the Toyota Tundra generates 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Ram claims a standstill-to-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds. Quoting this figure for a full-size truck seems like the realm of fantasy, but electric motors are great for delivering maximum thrust from virtually zero miles per hour.

The usual Ram 1500 pickup stands out from the rest of its class because it has coil springs at the back instead of leaf springs. This gives a much more comfortable and sophisticated ride quality. The Ramcharger is set to be even smoother with a rear air suspension as standard. For those times when the driver could use a little help, the Ramcharger’s array of assistance features includes a hands-free adaptive cruise control that can adjust speed automatically when curves are just ahead. Drivers still have to keep their eyes on the road, though.

Payload and Towing

Ram says its new Ramcharger truck has a maximum payload capacity of 2,625 pounds and can tow up to 14,000 pounds. That’s better than any competitor, whether they have a hybrid drivetrain, gasoline, or diesel.

Fuel Economy

The Ramcharger has a big battery (92 kilowatt-hour), and the company is aiming for an electric-only range of 145 miles. That would be mightily impressive. The truck could be used in EV (electric vehicle) mode most of the time. To conserve energy, the front motor can disconnect automatically under light loads. With a full tank of gas and a full charge, the maximum distance covered could be 690 miles. Using a DC fast charger, the battery can take on 50 miles of range in about 10 minutes.

Tech-Rich Interior

Like most electric vehicles. The Ramcharger’s battery is located underneath, yet still manages to maintain a practical flat cabin floor. The Crew Cab is especially spacious. Pricier trims come with real wood and leather, plus premium touches like laser-etched decorations, carbon fiber or metal accents, and several color schemes. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with the capability for over-the-air updates. A 12-inch touchscreen comes as standard, with a 14.5-inch unit available higher up. A 10.25-inch screen is offered for the front passenger.

Modern Exterior

From what we’ve seen of the 2025 Ramcharger so far, it looks like it will be available as a Quad Cab in Tradesman trim, as well as a Crew Cab in pricier versions. Ram has revamped its entire line of full-size trucks, while introducing this plug-in hybrid and the all-electric Ram REV. The new styling includes LED lighting at both ends, along with cleaner lines that make the truck look more contemporary (to our eyes). The Ramcharger and its electric counterpart look even more modern. They still have some well-loved features, though, like the Rambox lockable bed compartment.

Our Favorite Features and Tech

Multi-function tailgate
This optional feature can flip down like a regular tailgate or open out like a pair of barn doors, albeit asymmetrical with a 60/40 split.

Digital driver information display
The Ramcharger’s 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster can be configured to show various types of information and have the settings saved to dedicated user profiles.

Trailer Reverse Steering Control
As well as steering a trailer in the desired direction, this optional feature can also help the driver reverse a trailer in a straight line.

Park Sense Active Park Assist
While the driver controls the throttle, brakes, and gear selection, this optional self-parking system takes care of the steering. It works for both parallel and perpendicular spaces.

Klipsch audio
A new brand in automotive sound but well known among home audio aficionados, this Klipsch 23-speaker/1,228-watt setup is standard in the new range-topping Tungsten model. According to Ram, it’s the most powerful factory sound system available in a truck.

Bi-directional charging
The Ramcharger can also send out electrical energy, powering things like tools and lighting, or topping up an electric vehicle’s battery.

Engine & Transmission

The new-for-2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger plug-in hybrid deploys a 3.6-liter V6, plus two electric motors, one for each axle. Total output is a considerable 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. There’s no actual mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the wheels. Instead, the V6 supplies energy for the electric motors and battery.

3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty

Ram’s new-vehicle warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. Powertrains are covered for five years or 60,000 miles. This is all typical for the class. Some manufacturers also offer free scheduled maintenance, however. We expect the battery warranty to last eight years or 100,000 miles.
