The Porsche Taycan is the first-ever all-electric Porsche model. It’s positioned squarely against the Tesla Model S as a premium EV sedan with the performance of a sports car. The maximum range of 227 miles might not sound very impressive, but Porsche engineered the Taycan with a priority on performance. The result is an upscale, high-tech luxury car with quick acceleration and athletic handling for a sedan this size.
Porsche is seldom the value choice in any segment, but that is the case with the Taycan. It starts at $82,700 and qualifies for the federal EV tax credit of up to $7,500. That means it has the lowest starting price in its small class, consisting of the Tesla Model S and Audi e-tron GT. However, the cost can go well over $200,000 in the Turbo S trim with options.
For the 2022 model, Porsche has made it so natural-language voice commands can now be used for the Taycan’s entertainment and information system. Also, a new temperature-management system allows for slightly faster battery charging.
New for 2022 is the Taycan GTS, which puts out 590 horsepower and has sportier tuning for its adaptive air suspension and active suspension management. Also included in the new GTS are Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, the Sport Chrono Package, and a unique steering wheel.
Further setting the new GTS apart are black satin exterior trim, black satin wheels, and Porsche’s Race-Tex (a synthetic vegan leather) upholstery.
The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Porsche Taycan models when purchasing from a dealership.
Original MSRP | KBB Fair Purchase Price (national avg.) | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
$84,050 | $51,228 | |||
$105,150 | $64,626 | |||
$132,750 | TBD | |||
$152,250 | TBD | |||

For reference, the 2022 Porsche Taycan originally had a starting sticker price of $84,050, with the range-topping Taycan Turbo S Sedan 4D starting at $186,350.
Porsche took care not to compromise on performance when creating the brand’s first EV. The Taycan builds on Porsche’s good track record of using electrification to improve performance, plus the benefit of improved efficiency.
The battery packaged in the floor of the car gives the Taycan a low center of gravity. That engineering is mated to a well-tuned chassis with agile handling, precise steering, and grabby brakes. These components and the lively electric powertrain make the Taycan a thrill to drive at any speed.
While all Taycan models provide thrills, the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variants of the Taycan are the most fun. Compared to a base rear-wheel-drive model, the 4S model has more power, more torque, and quicker acceleration on top of better all-season traction provided by all-wheel drive. The Turbo model turns up the heat with 670 horsepower, and the range-topping Turbo S model has 750 horsepower and a lightning-quick 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds.
So, like with just about any Porsche model, you can choose your level of performance. If you’re shopping for a Porsche in the first place, performance is probably a priority for you. We recommend getting the most high-performance Taycan you can afford, and even if that’s the single-motor base model, you’ll have no complaints about how it drives.
The inside of the Porsche Taycan fits for a high-tech, high-performance luxury sedan. Par for the Porsche course, the materials are top-notch, and the overall fit and finish is the envy of the industry.
The front seats are comfortable yet tastefully bolstered for spirited driving. The cockpit has an air of Porsche tradition, but it’s also decidedly modern with a curved digital display for the driver.
The Taycan has a standard 4-seat configuration with two bolstered seats in the back. They’re roomy enough to seat two average-sized adults comfortably. A small center seat is optional for 5-passenger seating.
The size of the trunk depends on the model. The standard Taycan and the Taycan 4S have 14.3 cubic feet of space in the rear trunk, and it’s cut down to 12.9 cubic feet in the Turbo and Turbo S models because of a bigger battery. That trunk size is about average for a sedan this size. There’s also a 2.8-cubic-foot “frunk,” or front trunk.
While we like the high-tech interior of the Taycan, some aspects of it take getting used to. You might think Porsche went a little overboard with touch-sensitive controls in place of traditional knobs and buttons. If you’re not used to these kinds of controls, there’s a bit of a learning curve.
Like the interior, the exterior of the Porsche Taycan strikes an excellent balance of traditional Porsche design and a thoroughly modern look. You can tell that it’s a Porsche from any angle, but it’s also something entirely new.
If you’re picky about paint, you’ll love the new Paint to Sample feature available for the Taycan. This considerably widens the variety of paint options for this Porsche and includes classic Porsche paint colors like Acid Green, Riviera Blue, and many more.
With Paint to Sample Plus, you can have your Taycan in just about any color you want. If you want the color of your Taycan to match the color of a favorite accessory or outfit perfectly, Porsche has you covered.
Naturally, a wide range of wheel designs is available, including a Taycan-exclusive design with carbon fiber “Aeroblades.” For a more aggressive and sporty look, you’ll be interested in the available SportDesign Package in carbon fiber, which revises the front and rear fascias. You can also get it just in the front for about $2,000 less.
The Porsche Taycan is very similar to the Tesla Model S and Audi e-tron GT in terms of size. It’s a little smaller than the Porsche Panamera, but the proportions are similar.
PORSCHE ADVANCED COCKPIT
This beautiful interior combines Porsche craftsmanship with modern tech features like a curved digital display for the driver. A wide range of options allows you to make it your own.
PAINT TO SAMPLE
Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus allow you to choose from a virtually infinite range of paint colors, including classic Porsche colors like Riviera Blue and Acid Green.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan comes with a generous list of standard features. The standard powertrain is a single electric motor powering the rear wheels. Launch Control comes standard, which adds a nice boost in power when turned on.
Standard interior features include partial leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a curved 16.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a universal garage door opener, and ambient interior lighting.
The standard infotainment system is a 10.9-inch touchscreen with navigation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. It’s mated to a 10-speaker audio system.
Standard driver assistance tech features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, and rain-sensing wipers.
There are tons of options for the Porsche Taycan, many of which are costly. For the base trim, a few desirable features include a Premium Package that adds matrix design LED headlights, ventilated front seats with memory, a glass roof, Bose premium audio, a 360-degree camera, and blind-spot monitoring.
Individual options include various seating surfaces like Race-Tex suede and Olea Club leather, a rear middle seat, heated rear seats, quad-zone automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel. For tech features, you can add adaptive cruise control, the Porsche InnoDrive system, Remote Park Assist, a 10.9-inch touchscreen on the passenger side, and Burmester surround-sound premium audio.
The 4S trim of the Taycan adds a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive plus red brake calipers and adaptive air suspension. An available Performance Package adds torque-vectoring 4-wheel steering, a Sport Plus drive mode, sport chassis control, and the Sport Chrono package with a multifunction steering wheel and a stopwatch. Additionally, you can add ceramic-coated brakes.
There’s a 93-kWh Performance Battery Plus available for the base and 4S models. This battery upgrade comes standard on the Turbo and Turbo S models. The Turbo model also comes standard with some of the contents of the 4S Performance Package like torque-vectoring steering plus bigger wheels, ceramic-coated brakes, memory front seats, heated back seats, stainless steel pedals, Bose audio, and a suede headliner.
The top Turbo S model delivers the most performance in the Taycan range with 750 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds. It also has unique wheels, 10-piston brakes, the Sport Chrono package, 4-wheel steering, sport front seats, a GT steering wheel, and suede upholstery.
Perhaps the most notable new option on the 2022 Taycan is Remote Park Assist, which makes it possible to remotely park this electric Porsche using your smartphone. The driver, of note, doesn’t need to be behind the wheel of the Taycan, and the system works for both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. The driver must hold down a button in the Porsche Connect app on their phone until the Taycan is parked.
There are many different technical configurations of the Porsche Taycan, all of which are electric. The base model has a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive. It’s upgradable to the 4S model, which has a dual-motor configuration and all-wheel drive. The high-performance Turbo and Turbo S models also have two electric motors and all-wheel drive and significantly improve performance.
The base and 4S models are available with a Performance Battery Plus upgrade, adding a longer range and more horsepower.
When it comes to range, the Taycan lags behind its chief rival, the Tesla Model S. The Long Range and Plaid models both achieve a maximum range of around 400 miles. The Model S also out-performs the Taycan in acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds for Long Range and 1.99 seconds for Plaid.
