The definition of code U0284 is “Lost Communication With Active Grille Air Shutter Module A,” although some vehicle manufacturers will list it as “Lost Communication With Active Grille Air Shutter 1 Motor Module.” This error code means your Controller Area Network bus (CAN) cannot communicate with the active grille shutter module. The active grille air shutter system, also just called the active grille shutter or grill shutter, is a way to improve aerodynamics for many vehicles. The active air shutter system, located at the front bumper lower opening, opens and closes the complete shutter assembly to carefully control the airflow that enters the engine compartment, usually opening at lower speeds to keep the engine cool and closing at higher speeds to reduce drag. To do this movement, it must communicate with other parts of the vehicle, including the fuel pump control module, chassis control module, body control module, powertrain control module (PCM), and engine control module (ECM).
