A code U0121 is a generic communication system diagnostic trouble code. It refers to an electrical issue that causes problems with the ABS, or Anti-Lock Brake System control module. Specifically, it refers to an error with the communication circuits between the ABS and at least one other control module.

More About Error Code U0121

The ABS, or Anti-Lock Brake System, is a control module that helps you control your vehicle when braking. It’s required in all modern vehicles in the EU since 2004, and in the U.S. since 2012.

The ABS modulates brake pressure and maintains how much tire slip your vehicle has. It prevents wheel lockup when you brake abruptly or when you’re driving in adverse conditions. It also reduces skidding when you stop abruptly, ensuring that you maintain control of the vehicle.

To achieve these, the ABS control module communicates with other modules in your vehicle. For example, it decreases the wheel speed during braking, using information passed on by the wheel speed sensor. This information is passed through the CAN, or Controller Area Network bus. If the ABS cannot receive or transmit information, a U0121 code will be set.

What Are the Symptoms of a U0121 Code?

Common symptoms of code U0121 include an illuminated check engine light and illuminated ABS light. Depending on your manufacturer, you may also have an illuminated TRAC indicator light and an illuminated ESP (Electronic Stability Program) or ESC (Electronic Stability Control) indicator light.

What Are Some Causes of a U0121 Code?

A U0121 engine code is most often caused by poor electrical connection issues in the CAN bus circuit or the ABS module. Common electrical connection issues include a ground circuit or loss of power.

Another common cause is a dead battery, which may require a battery replacement. Rarely, this can be caused by a faulty ABS module or CAN module.

How Serious Is the U0121 Code?

The Anti-Lock Brake System prevents you from getting into an accident should you need to brake in an emergency. In bad driving conditions, or swerving out of the way to prevent a crash, an ABS will help you keep control of your vehicle. Make sure to diagnose this code as quickly as possible to ensure your car’s safety.

Can I Still Drive with a U0121 Code?

It’s not recommended to drive with a U0121 code. During an emergency brake, the ABS will lessen the chances of an accident. If you encounter a driving situation in which you need to apply emergency braking, it’s best to have a functional ABS system to keep you safe.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a U0121 Code?

To diagnose a U0121 code, a technician will first address other codes, which may require diagnosing a different control module. Then, they’ll ensure that the code is not intermittent, a memory code, or caused by battery voltage issues. The ABS requires a proper battery voltage level to be functional, so change or replace the battery if necessary.

If the code persists, do a visual inspection of the wiring harness and connectors. Obvious signs of damage include wear, burns, and corrosion. Then, check the resistance, continuity, reference voltage, and ground signal. Once wiring and connections are checked, determine if the code persists. A wiring diagram specific to your make and model is necessary. At this point, it’s good to check TSBs, or Technical Service Bulletins, to see if this is a known issue.

The next step is to perform a scan tool data listening test on the PCM, or Powertrain Control Module. The PCM monitors information passed from one control module to another. A scan will determine if there’s data passed between the ABS and other circuits. If there is data present, then a professional will check the ABS control module then all its circuits using a scan tool. If it does not respond to the scan tool, check the circuits with a DMM, or digital multimeter.

If the code persists, a technician will check for known ABS issues, like faulty wheel speed sensors. This may depend on your vehicle’s make and model. If the code persists, this indicates a faulty ABS control module. A technician will try to reprogram the ABS module. If that doesn’t work, it will need to be replaced.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a U0121 Code?

It’s important to be thorough to get an accurate diagnosis. You’ll need to test every component to ensure that you don’t miss the real cause of the code. Common mistakes that occur when inspecting a U0121 fault code include not checking the freeze frame data, not checking the make and model-specific documents about the code, not using the correct diagnosis equipment, and using incompatible components and parts. Another common mistake is not addressing other codes before diagnosing code U0121. To do this, you’ll need to check out the OBD-II database to diagnose other codes you’re dealing with.

Need Additional Help with Your U0121 Code?

It can be tricky to deal with a U0121 code, especially if you’re not used to diagnosing codes on your own. Since it affects the ABS, it’s also important to ensure that it’s diagnosed as soon as possible. If you’re dealing with a U0121 code, find a repair shop in your area to quickly diagnose this code.
