The definition of code U010C is “Lost Communication With Turbocharger/Supercharger Control Module A,” sometimes not including the distinction of “A” in certain vehicle manufacturers. This code indicates that the Controller Area Network (CAN network) no longer receives information from the turbocharger or supercharger control module. The powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) can also trigger this code if they’re not receiving information. Most OBD-II vehicles with a CAN bus communication system can end up with this generic communication code.

More About Error Code U010C

In vehicles without a turbocharger or supercharger, the only way to get air is through the pistons. However, the turbocharger or supercharger allows modern vehicles to force more air through the process, along with the corresponding fuel ratio, increasing the power available. These components of your vehicle will raise the pressure inside the intake manifold, which allows more air to flow into the cylinders when the engine intake valves open. However, the turbocharger or supercharger’s dedicated control module does need to communicate with other modules inside your vehicle, especially if you’re using a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), which it will try to do through the CAN bus circuit. If it’s unable to do this, it will set generic trouble code U010C for your code reader.

What Are the Symptoms of a U010C Code?

The most common symptom of the U010C memory code is simply performance problems with your turbocharger or supercharger. These problems may include the turbocharger or supercharger not working as expected, resulting in a lack of power, your fuel efficiency going down, or even the turbocharger or supercharger stopping work entirely. You should also expect to see the check engine light turn on, along with any other warning lights that might be applicable.

What Are Some Causes of a U010C Code?

The most common cause of the U010C diagnostic fault code is a faulty turbocharger or supercharger issue. This may include issues with the turbocharger actuator or turbocharger control module failure. Sometimes, the actual turbocharger or supercharger will be faulty. Outside of this, you may see circuit problems, including damaged wires, poor connections, and problems with wiring harnesses and connector pins. If you have a dead battery or issues with the battery positive/negative wires, you can see this code, but you’ll also usually see several codes indicating issues with electrical connections and power supply throughout the vehicle. Finally, you can also check for general data network issues, especially if you see problems with multiple module connections.

How Serious Is the U010C Code?

The U010C generic trouble code should be considered serious. Although the turbocharger or supercharger only provides a performance boost, these components in your vehicle work hard every time you’re accelerating, helping to create a more effective acceleration experience. If you’re seeing a loss of power, you’re much more likely to see acceleration hesitation and potentially even problems with fuel economy. Fix it as soon as possible for the best results.

Can I Still Drive with a U010C Code?

You will usually be able to drive with the U010C communication code. Although the turbocharger and supercharger are important for your vehicle, they’re not mandatory. However, think twice before driving with the U010C code active. If your turbocharger or supercharger is malfunctioning rather than completely powered off, communication DTCs can result in engine misfires, which can cause engine damage over time. Plus, the issues with fuel economy can mean that it’s more expensive to run your vehicle.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a U010C Code?

The diagnostic procedure for the U010C generic trouble code can be difficult for many DIYers because of the nature of this fault code. Just having the scan tool isn’t enough. You need to be able to tell whether the turbocharger or supercharger itself is faulty, whether the actuator or control modules are faulty, or even sometimes data network issues are occurring in your CAN bus. These diagnoses are hard for a DIYer to make, especially because of the advanced tools necessary. Most people should expect to need help from an automotive diagnostician to get effective repair procedures for this code without communication system diagnostic trouble.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a U010C Code?

The inspection process for the U010C code is often very difficult because of the advanced knowledge necessary to inspect the code and determine the core issue. On top of your normal code scanner, you’ll likely need special tools, such as complete wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins, and repair manuals. You should check the fuses, connections, broken wires, terminals, connectors, and battery voltage. In some cases, fixing the problem requires using a wire bristle brush and electrical grease to clean your wires, then restoring loose connections manually. If you’re not confident doing this, you should talk to a certified mechanic.

Need Additional Help with Your U010C Code?

Most people will need additional help with the U010C code, which is why knowing what to do is helpful if you’re looking for an expert’s assistance.

Your first step should be to find an auto repair shop in your area. This will make it easier for you to access the necessary repairs without going too far out of your way.

It’s also common for this to be a secondary problem associated with additional codes. The OBD-II database at KBB.com will help you understand these other diagnostic trouble codes, which can be especially helpful if they’re codes you should tackle before you handle the U010C code.
