These diagnostic codes are part of a group that indicates there’s a problem with the O2 sensor signal in your ECM (engine control module). P2195 indicates that bank 1 sensor 1 is too lean, P2196 indicates that bank 1 sensor 1 is too rich, P2197 indicates that bank 2 sensor 1 is too lean, and P2198 indicates that bank 2 sensor 1 is too rich.

When your engine is running typically, you’re supposed to have a specific air-to-fuel ratio. If that ratio is off by any amount, the ECM is typically able to manipulate it slightly, allowing your car to continue running as effectively as possible. However, if the ECM has done all it can do and the oxygen or fuel continues to be too high or low, you may receive one of these diagnostic codes.
Typically, you’ll first notice issues with the way the air and fuel feed into the engine because your engine will stop working as smoothly. You may see excessive smoke coming from the exhaust, a lower fuel economy overall, generalized fuel economy issues, misfiring and overheating in your engine, and a check engine light that won’t go away.

If the reading is accurate, then these diagnostic codes are more serious than many. The mixture of fuel and air is what allows your engine to function properly, and while the vehicle will typically be able to continue running at the beginning, this problem can cause internal damage to the engine, which can end up being incredibly expensive and difficult to repair.

This diagnostic code typically won’t prevent your vehicle from running altogether, but it’s extremely important that you fix it as quickly as possible. The more you run your engine with these problems, the more likely that you’ll end up with damage that will cost significantly more to fix.
Diagnosis of this problem can be more difficult than it seems at first. It’s important that the technical expert check that the fuel-to-air ratio is actually off, and then proceed with other fixes depending on the result. The first step needs to be determining the actual problem, as the two main issues are either that the fuel-to-air ratio actually has a problem or that the sensors are accidentally misfiring in one way or another.
