The P1778 code indicates an issue with your vehicle’s transmission. If the stepping motor and the actual gear ratio have a significant difference in the number of steps, then it will set this code. The problem tends to lie with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), so much so that Nissan has actually issued an extended warranty for many vehicles with this transmission.
More About the P1778 Code
The P1778 code defined as “Transmission Reverse I/P1778 Circuit Malfunction” is only applicable to certain types of Nissan vehicles. It’s an extremely narrow range of vehicles, and even in some Nissan vehicles, you won’t see this definition. You may also see this code defined as “Step Motor Function” instead, which may or may not be the same problem. Because this problem is so narrowly used, it’s best to take it to an expert, who will be able to see the problem and fix it.
Some service centers will give you an online estimate to compare. Why drive around Town!?
The common symptoms of the P1778 code, outside of the check engine light turning on, tend to be the same problems that you’ll see with any other transmission code. You might notice your transmission slipping, for example, or issues with hard shifting. In some situations, the shifting may be so difficult that your vehicle will have a difficult time accelerating at all. Symptoms can vary dramatically but are generally focused around your transmission, and the longer you leave the problem, the more likely that the symptoms will cause serious issues with your vehicle’s function.
The P1778 code is almost always caused by an issue with the CVT. The CVT is your variable transmission, and it’s one of the most critical components of your vehicle. If you’re experiencing severe issues with your CVT, then it is generally the case that you’ll only be able to fix it by replacing the transmission entirely. It’s best to replace the transmission early on so that you don’t have to worry about any other problems that this might cause.
The P1778 code is incredibly serious; transmission problems are some of the most serious problems that you can have in a vehicle, and the P1778 code specifically indicates serious issues with the transmission. The longer you leave the transmission issues continuing, the more likely it will be that you’ll experience even more compounding issues. Replacing a transmission is already a very expensive process; why would you want to wait and make it even more expensive? Fixing this problem as soon as possible will reduce your cost.
You should avoid driving with the P1778 code active. Even if your vehicle will still technically start, you shouldn’t assume that this means it’s safe for you to drive. Because the problem lies with your transmission, the P1778 code can lead to serious safety and security concerns as you drive, most notably issues with your vehicle stalling, which can even occur while you’re driving. If your vehicle returns one of these codes, then stop driving immediately and contact an expert.
The diagnosis process for the P1778 code isn’t always difficult. Most of the time, this problem has to do with your vehicle’s CVT. If you see this code in your vehicle’s scan, then it generally means that there’s an issue with your CVT, especially if it’s by itself or accompanied only by other transmission problems. The issue has less to do with the diagnostic process and more to do with the replacement process, and most experts recommend that you leave transmission replacement to them.
Inspecting a P1778 code is generally not very difficult, but if you’re trying to make sure that the problem lies with the transmission, you may need to have some extra knowledge that not everyone has, especially when it comes to at-home DIY hobbyists. The inspection process requires you to understand what a well-functioning vehicle of your make and model looks like inside, as well as what the problem itself might look like. These are things that an expert is generally most well-equipped to answer.
If you’re planning to get help with replacing your transmission or you want a second opinion on the issues you’re dealing with, then it’s best to talk to an expert who may be able to help. Finding a local expert should be your first step when it comes to this code.
