The P1298 code indicates a failure of the injector driver module (IDM). This system works with the fuel injection system and engine control unit (ECU) or powertrain control module (PCM) to accurately control how much fuel enters the ignition valve and when. The PCM calculates the exact ignition timing and amount of fuel necessary based on various car sensors. When you’re experiencing IDM failure, the ignition timing will be off, which can cause many problems throughout your engine.
More About the P1298 Code
As with many diagnostic codes, there are a variety of manufacturer-specific definitions for a P1298 code. “IDM Failure” is most common for Citroen, Peugeot, and Ford; with Ford, you’ll often see it listed as “Injector control module -internal fault.” However, for other manufacturers, you may see different definitions, including:
Remember to always check the description of the P1298 code, not just the code number itself. Consulting your owner’s manual is always the best option.

The first symptom you might notice of a P1298 code is the check engine light turning on, although in some cases, you might not see this malfunction light. Issues with the IDM will usually present as problems with your idling cycle. Because the IDM failure can result in an irregular fuel supply, it’s likely that you’ll experience a rough idle, which can cause the engine to misfire or even stall. Additionally, your fuel efficiency will lower, as your engine will likely use too much fuel for proper handling. If the IDM is completely broken, then your car may not be able to start, as the engine might not be able to put the right amount of fuel into the engine.
When you see this code, it’s almost always because the IDM itself is broken. For the most part, the only way to fix this code is to replace the IDM, which you can purchase by itself and replace as a part within the car.
The IDM fault is fairly serious. In some cases, it can appear as a no-start condition, which means you won’t be able to drive at all. Even if you are able to drive, the irregular fuel supply can cause serious problems with the engine, up to and including permanent engine damage, which can be much more difficult and expensive to fix.
Physically, you may not be able to drive with some manifestations of this code. However, even if you are able to drive, you might experience severe drivability problems that can negatively impact your ability to drive effectively. If you’re experiencing drivability issues, then make sure you call your local repair shop to see whether you’re able to drive your vehicle to their shop or whether you should get a tow truck to bring the car in.
The main problem with a diagnosis for the P1298 code is that it very rarely appears by itself. Although you can usually fix the problem just by replacing the IDM, if the P1298 code is accompanied by other database codes, you’ll also need to fix those problems as well. The diagnosis process is less about the P1298 code and more about the other codes that you’ll almost certainly see, which an expert can likely help you with more than you can on your own as a DIYer.
The inspection process can be a bit tricky if you’re looking at wiring, sensor hookups, and other components of your engine that you might not know much about. Especially if you’re not familiar with what a well-functioning version of your engine looks like, let an expert handle the inspection process instead.
If you’re experiencing IDM failure, then there’s a problem with the injector driver module. This can lead to a variety of potential problems all throughout the engine, and the longer you leave it, the longer it will likely create serious problems within your engine. That means you need an expert who’s able to handle your P1298 code.
With Kelley, it’s easy to find a repair shop in your area, no matter what make or model your car is or what problems you’re experiencing. Finding the closest repair shop should be a simple process, and Kelley Blue Book makes it easier.
Additionally, many codes come with other codes that indicate other issues. The KBB OBD-II database is a great starting point for anyone who’s interested in finding out more about other codes that your car engine may have logged.
