The P1174 code on a Ford engine indicates a problem with the camshaft position sensor. This sensor monitors the speed and position of the camshaft, then feeds the data to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM is able to use this information to control the amount of fuel in the combustion chamber and the spark timing, so it ignites the fuel effectively. When you have an issue regarding the camshaft position sensor, there can be additional problems with the engine’s running processes.

More About the P1174 Code

The P1174 code has a variety of uses, and its definition as “Cam Sensor Fault” only applies to vehicles made by Ford specifically. If you see it in another car brand, then it’s more likely that it’s indicating an oxygen sensor problem. When your car throws any code, it’s important to make sure you look at the description of the code before you start looking into fixes; the brand of car you’re driving will impact what that code means.

What Are the Symptoms of a P1174 Code?

Especially at the beginning, it’s very uncommon for there to be almost any symptoms of a P1174 code at all. You should see the check engine light turn on, indicating that a specialist should take a look at your engine, but you likely won’t notice any drivability problems, at least for some time. If you leave the engine for some time, then you might notice issues with fuel economy and idling, as issues with the camshaft position can result in subpar engine function.

What Are Some Causes of a P1174 Code?

This code happens because of an issue with the cam sensor. That means the sensor itself may be faulty, in which case you’ll need to replace the sensor entirely. However, it’s also possible that the cam sensor harness has issues with being open or shorted or that the cam sensor has a poor electrical connection through its circuit. You’ll need to check to make sure the cam sensor is communicating with the ECM effectively before you replace it entirely.

How Serious Is the P1174 Code?

In the beginning, the P1174 code won’t be extremely serious. However, the problem can mount over time, creating problems within the engine, the most important part of the car. If you’re seeing this code and you aren’t able to fix it yourself, then it’s best to bring your car in to an expert who can help you fix the problem.

Can I Still Drive with a P1174 Code?

You should be able to drive with a P1174 code enough to bring it to a local vehicle expert. However, as with most codes that an engine throws, it’s best not to rely on this and keep the vehicle driving for a long period of time. The longer you drive on this code, the more likely it becomes that there will be a problem within the engine. Fixing the problem will help prevent a very expensive and difficult fix down the line.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P1174 Code?

If you are an intermediate DIY worker and the problem is fairly obvious, then you may be able to fix the P1174 code yourself. However, if you don’t notice any obvious problems just by doing a quick inspection of the cam sensor, the problem might be a bit more difficult to fix or may require specialized equipment to fix it effectively. In this case, talking to an expert is a better option.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P1174 Code?

Initially inspecting the P1174 code doesn’t have to be very difficult. You can look for any obviously damaged components or connector pins that are broken, bent, corroded, or pushed out of their normal spot. However, inspecting the code further than this, especially if you’re looking to see whether the electrical connection is active, can be much more difficult. After a quick inspection doesn’t turn anything up, it may be worth it to talk to a local service center.

Need Additional Help with Your P1174 Code?

The P1174 code may be a code that you can fix fairly easily; in this case, a DIY fix is certainly possible. However, if you’ve done the inspection and can’t find anything, or you aren’t a DIYer and want to get an expert to fix the problem, you’ll probably need to talk to a repair shop in your area.

First, you need to find service centers near you using the Kelley search service. This way, you’ll know the closest repair centers where you can bring in your car for a fix.

If you’re looking for more information about other codes that your car may be throwing, then it’s also a good idea to check out the OBD-II code database at KBB. This can help prepare you for other problems that your car may be experiencing, both now and in the future.
