The P0A93 code definition is “Inverter A Cooling System Performance.” This trouble code indicates that your vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) has identified a problem with your vehicle’s cooling system, specifically the system that cools your inverter. Although this is a generic powertrain code and can, therefore, show up in any OBD-II-equipped hybrid vehicle, it anecdotally seems to show up most frequently in the Toyota Prius.

More About the P0A93 Code

In a hybrid vehicle, you’ll find an “inverter,” which converts the high-voltage direct current (DC) into alternating current (DC) to run the motors that drive the wheels. This inverter creates a significant amount of heat, which means that in most vehicles, there’s a specific inverter cooling system to remove that heat and route it to a heat exchanger in the transmission. Usually, this has to do with an electric water pump that helps push inverter coolant around the system. This error code simply means that there’s a problem with the inverter coolant pumps, either with the inverter water pump itself or with another component of the inverter system.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0A93 Code?

In some cases, the P0A93 fault code symptoms will end at just the check engine light. However, if this error code does indicate a problem with the hybrid cooling system, it could also result in your inverter overheating. The inverter pump needs to work effectively to remove heat from around this system; pump failure or any other problem with the electric coolant pump can result in a severe issue that can eventually lead to engine overheating.

What Are Some Causes of a P0A93 Code?

There are a number of different causes of the P0A93 code. In the Toyota Prius, frequently one of the more common recipients of this failure code, the problem was often an internal manufacturing defect, which led to a pump recall. However, there are many other options that may lead to this failure code. Here are a few:

This trouble code won’t usually put your vehicle into something like Limp Mode or Limp Home Mode, which means you technically can replace it. However, if the problem isn’t something to do with your coolant level and there’s an actual concern with your vehicle’s ability to cool the inverter, even a very short drive could result in dangerously high engine temperatures. You definitely do not want to risk this. If the electric cooling pump isn’t working properly, avoid driving the vehicle if at all possible.

Diagnosis for the P0A93 code can sometimes be difficult due to the fact that hybrid coolant pump failure can come from a variety of problems. If you don’t understand how this pump process works, you could end up not being able to identify the actual problem. Plus, because hybrid vehicles are less common than complete internal combustion vehicles, it could be more difficult for you to identify specific problems with the coolant inverter pump.
