The definition of code P0524 is “Engine Oil Pressure Too Low.” This code means that the powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) has identified that the engine oil pressure is below the manufacturer’s specified requirements. This is a generic powertrain code, and it may pop up in almost every OBD-II vehicle out there, as oil is an important part of every vehicle.

More About Error Code P0524

The oil pressure sensor is an important part of your vehicle’s system. This sensor, also called the oil pressure sender in some vehicles, detects the mechanical oil pressure in the engine, sending a voltage reading to the PCM or ECM regarding the current oil pressure. If the engine oil pressure sender or sensor drops extremely low, typically a “critically low” value, it will trigger this code.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0524 Code?

The most common symptoms of the P0524 engine code are that the check engine light or other malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate. This is often an oil pressure warning indicator lamp, and if you have an oil pressure gauge on your instrument cluster, it may read low or even zero. Aside from that, the main symptoms before experiencing severe and catastrophic engine failure will usually be abnormal engine noises, with a “grinding” sound in the engine, and the engine even producing smoke.

What Are Some Causes of a P0524 Code?

Most of the time, the cause of the P0524 code is simply insufficient oil in the engine, causing insufficient oil pressure. A mechanical failure within the oil system can also cause a perceived issue with insufficient oil pressure. If you have a high enough oil level, the problem may be that you have the wrong oil viscosity or that you’re experiencing issues with contaminated oil, with that contamination coming from fuel, coolant, or other fluids. The oil pressure sensor may also be faulty and indicate a lower pressure than your vehicle has available. Sometimes, worn internal engine components can also result in the P0524 code.

How Serious Is the P0524 Code?

This is an exceptionally serious code, so much so that if you notice a low oil pressure, such as if you see a low oil pressure warning light on your instrument cluster, you should immediately pull over and shut off the vehicle. If the engine oil pressure drops exceptionally low, you can cause permanent engine damage extremely quickly, requiring difficult and expensive repairs. To stay as safe as possible, you should treat this as one of the most serious fuel system codes you can see.

Can I Still Drive with a P0524 Code?

You cannot drive with the P0524 engine code active. In some cases, you might physically be able to drive for a short time, but it will inevitably harm your engine if you continue to drive with the code active, even for a short period. This might not be the case only if your core problem is that the oil pressure sensor is faulty. However, given that this certainly isn’t the problem 100% of the time, it’s not a good idea to take that gamble.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0524 Code?

Diagnosing the P0524 code can be easy in some cases and decidedly trickier in others. In many cases, the problem is simply that you need to top up your oil levels or that you need to change out your oil. If that’s the case, the problem will likely be easy to solve. However, if it’s not, you will have to do more investigation to determine the core problem, including issues with wiring and electrical connections and the possibility of a problem within the internal engine. This is why leaving the P0524 code to a certified mechanic is a good idea.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0524 Code?

Inspecting the P0524 code can be just as difficult as diagnosing the P0524 code, especially if the problem is more difficult to uncover. You’ll need to perform a visual inspection of the wiring, which usually requires a wiring diagram. Plus, you’ll need a code scanner and more sources of vehicle information, which might include technical service bulletins and vehicle repair guides. Inspecting the P0524 code is often difficult, so most recommend leaving it to a professional.

Need Additional Help with Your P0524 Code?

The P0524 diagnostic trouble code often requires additional help, especially because it’s extremely serious. If you see the P0524 code, you will want help with it.

To fix the problem, you’ll want to find an auto repair shop in your area. You can’t drive your vehicle when this code is active, so finding a local automobile repair shop can help you get to a repair shop more easily.
