A P0496 error code is an extension of OBD II code P0. All P0 codes are generic – which means they could apply to all makes and models. They’re always displayed as P0XXX. The third numeral in the code sequence identifies where a vehicle’s OBD II system has encountered a problem. The number 4 indicates an issue with a vehicle’s auxiliary emission controls. This control system senses temperature, vehicle speed, engine RPM, transmission gear, manifold vacuum and other vehicle parameters. As it pertains to OBD II code P0496, the vehicle’s intake vacuum flow is operating unusually.

More About Error Code P0496

DTC P0496 essentially means that a vehicle’s evaporative emissions (EVAP) system is experiencing a problem with purge flow. There are numerous ways in which a vehicle’s EVAP system can malfunction. Your vehicle’s EVAP system ensures that fuel vapors don’t escape from your vehicle’s fuel tank and disperse into the atmosphere. This complex system is composed of fuel vapor pressure sensors, a vapor pipe and a charcoal canister.

Purge flow refers to the amount of fuel vapors that are channeled through to the engine. The amount of fuel vapors often varies regarding the amount of air that enters the EVAP system through the intake vacuum. The intake vacuum draws fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the engine to be burned as a normal process of combustion. The engine control unit ECU is responsible for regulating the intake vacuum flow of the EVAP system. The charcoal canister is a necessary component which stores fuel vapors from the fuel tank as well. The intake vacuum normally channels air to the charcoal canister, allowing fuel vapors to flow through the purge valves as they open.

Error code P0496 simply indicates high purge flow. This means that more air is flowing into the charcoal canister, which triggers an increase in fuel vapor channeled to the engine.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0496 Code?

There are some common symptoms associated with the display of a P0496 error code. The most common symptom is the illumination of a vehicle’s check engine light. Without this signal, many people would not notice that there is an issue with their vehicle’s EVAP system because this DTC does not result in a noticeable odor. Also, you may have difficulty starting your vehicle due to the accumulation of vapors in the engine. More often than not, your engine could be running rich, which could result in damage to the catalytic converter.

What Are Some Causes of a P0496 Code?

There are many things related mainly to the vehicles EVAP system that could result in the display of this DTC. These causes include:

  • A faulty purge or vent solenoid or valve
  • A malfunctioning EVAP or fuel pressure sensor
  • A shorted wire
  • Poor electrical connection
  • A defective purge flow sensor
  • A leaking EVAP system hose
  • A leaking charcoal canister

How Serious Is the P0496 Code?

The seriousness of this code is, at its core, a paradox. There are very little issues that are apparent when driving with a P0496 DTC aside from the illumination of the check engine light. That being said, many people don’t realize that their EVAP system is malfunctioning until it’s too late. Therefore, an illuminated check engine light always warrants an immediate diagnosis from a professional and qualified mechanic in order to prevent severe damages, including damage to the catalytic converter.

Can I Still Drive with a P0496 Code?

It’s important to seek repairs from a mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further, more serious damage to your vehicle that will result in your car not starting at all. It makes sense to be proactive whenever the check engine light stays on.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0496 Code?

This DTC has many causes, symptoms, and implications. The EVAP system of your vehicle is the most likely of all vehicle components to malfunction, hence the dozens of other codes that may appear as a result of an EVAP system malfunction. Your vehicle’s EVAP system is one of the most complex of your vehicle’s systems, therefore a DIY diagnosis can often lead to more harm than good. Sometimes, individuals rely on the internet to try and resolve EVAP system error codes themselves, when in reality this could result in replacing or repairing parts that were fully functional to begin with. Many people have replaced the EVAP Purge Volume Control Valve before checking to see if it is even leaking. That’s why it’s best to seek a diagnosis from a professional mechanic who can properly home in on the root cause and start on the required repairs.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0496 Code?

It is relatively inexpensive for a mechanic to repair the faulty components of the EVAP system. It should be noted that there are many tools required for this code’s repair that individuals may not have access to in order to render a proper diagnosis and complete the proper repairs. These tools include a vacuum gauge, EVAP smoke machine leak checker, hand vacuum pump, car diagnostic scanner and a digital multimeter. If you don’t own these tools, buying them could be more expensive than the cost of repairs. It is best to find a local mechanic who is experienced in these types of repairs and has sufficient knowledge of a vehicle’s EVAP system rather than taking a DIY approach.
