The code definition of code P0475 is “Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A.” This code indicates that your powertrain control module (PCM) has determined a problem with one of your exhaust pressure control valves, specifically valve “A” if you have multiple valves. This is a very generic powertrain code and can come up as a problem in most OBD-II-equipped vehicles, but it typically applies to diesel engines.

More About the P0475 Code

During a cold start warm-up, your engine needs to retain as much heat as possible to prepare for the driving process as successfully as you can. The exhaust pressure control valve is an important component of this process. It sits along the exhaust stream after the exhaust manifold, generating heat and opposing cylinder pressure from the engine, allowing your engine to warm up more quickly during a cold start. Back pressure or backpressure is the result of blocking the exhaust gases produced in the engine that would normally exit through the exhaust pipe. The added backpressure causes the engine to work harder to overcome this exhaust blockage, speeding up the process of engine warm-up to reduce the amount of emissions produced in a cold engine. When you see this code, it means your vehicle’s PCM has detected some kind of problem with the exhaust pressure control valve.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0475 Code?

The most common symptom of the P0475 code, as with most codes, is an illuminated check engine light. It’s common to see this light turn on even if you haven’t started seeing issues with your drivability at all. Once you do see these issues, it’s most likely to start with your engine having a difficult time warming up. However, a pressure control valve malfunction can also result in issues with braking and acceleration, as the exhaust back pressure valve can also oppose cylinder pressure, which slows the engine down, especially during towing.

What Are Some Causes of a P0475 Code?

The P0475 diagnostic trouble code usually occurs due to an issue with your electrical connections. These electrical connections may exist at your exhaust pressure control solenoid and its wiring harness, your power supply circuit, or the exhaust back pressure sensor (EBP sensor). The exhaust pressure sensor may also just be malfunctioning, unable to deliver the correct level of preprogrammed pressure. Very occasionally, the issue may be due to a PCM concern, but this is extremely uncommon.

How Serious Is the P0475 Code?

You should definitely treat the P0475 code as being overall quite serious. This is because your exhaust valve isn’t just for warming up your engine; it also plays a crucial role in allowing your vehicle to stop, especially when you’re towing large loads under a more severe engine load. A faulty exhaust pressure control valve can lead to serious problems for your exhaust pipe and engine cylinders, even if it doesn’t seem like there are many drivability issues right now.

Can I Still Drive with a P0475 Code?

When you see any error codes that illuminate your engine warning light, it’s best to stop driving and look for a fix as soon as possible. Even if you’re not currently seeing any issues outside of the check engine light, you don’t want to start experiencing braking problems in traffic. It’s recommended to fix any electrical circuit faults or part malfunctions before you start driving your vehicle regularly again.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0475 Code?

There aren’t too many reasons why you might see the P0475 code, so this can be easier to diagnose than some other codes out there. However, DIYers often don’t have a lot of experience with fixing these codes, which means you won’t know how to fix the codes from memory. You’ll need to rely on various tools, including your scan tool, a repair manual, and possibly other tools, such as a diagnostic flow chart. This is one of the reasons it’s generally best to get help from an expert to fix these problems.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0475 Code?

Even though the problem of the P0475 code usually has to do with your electrical connections, the specific concern you’re dealing with can vary quite a bit. Trying to determine whether you’re dealing with faulty connections or an intermittent connection, understanding resistance specifications, and determining whether certain components have a lack of power can require more specific knowledge than you have — for example, you may not be able to conduct an exhaust back pressure step test yourself. If you’re seeing issues with your code, talk to an expert to ensure the best fix possible.

Need Additional Help with Your P0475 Code?

Many DIYers end up searching for additional help with their P0475 code. If you want to make sure that there’s a minimal chance that your code returns after you start driving again, an expert can test all the individual components and return your vehicle back to normal operation.

First, you should find an auto repair shop in your area. Finding a local shop is a great way to ensure you get a fix without having to travel too far.

Additionally, you may want to check out the OBD-II database. If your scan tool is showing multiple codes, this database can help you learn more about what each means before you contact the auto repair shop, allowing you to understand what you’re probably going to need fixed when you get there.
